Are you looking for some truly undiscovered islands in Greece to spend
your next summer
vacation? We gathered for you three islands that are literally at the edge of
Greece and can offer you isolation and contact with nature. Enjoy!
Gavdos
You are at
Europe’s edge, in the last inhabited island of Greece, a heaven in your dreams.
Take a journey in this paradise on earth, and you will see the difference. With
amazing contribution to ecology, together with the nearby tiny islet of
Gavdopoula, Gavdos is a migratory bird stop as well as a shelter for endangered
seals and caretta-caretta turtle. Gavdos is an off-the-beaten-path Greek island
for those who love nature, a peaceful stay and good food. In its well-made
paths, you can take gorgeous walks and get drunk with tsikoudia, the tsipouro
of Crete. At the endless beaches of Gavdos, you will enjoy the best sunrises of
your life. The beaches of Agianni and Sarakiniko are tempting, but don’t miss
also Kastri, Ampelos, Kedres and Korfo. If you like the ultimate privacy, Pyrgos
has two wonderful secluded beaches. In Karave, you will find traditional Greek
taverns with excellent food, as Gavdos is famous for its fresh fish. You can go
to Gavdos by boat from Sfakia or Palaiochora in Crete.

Fourni
It is not a
coincidence that the island of Fourni, near Ikaria, was the island of pirates.
Here, time stops, and the blue of the sea mixes with the green of the island
and the white of the white-washed houses. Beauty surrounds you everywhere, and
if you want to swim in the clearest sea waters you can find in Greece, just
pick a beach. They are all gorgeous, but be prepared to walk as there is no access
to the beaches by car. If you have time for an excursion, take the boat and get
to Chrisomilia to have enough of sea, sun and verdant nature. You can go to
Fournoi by boat from Piraeus or Ikaria or take the aeroplane to Samos and then
by boat from there.

Othoni
At the far
end of the Ionian Sea, Othoni is the largest of the Diapontia islands (the
other are Ereikoussa and Mathraki), where the legend says that Calypso kept
Odysseus imprisoned. The island has two settlements, named Ammos, and one
mountainous called Chorio. The most beautiful beaches are Fyki and Aspri Ammos
(=white sand). In Ereikoussa, which took its name from the shrub reiki and is
the northernmost island, impressive is the beach in the settlement of Porto. You
can go to these islands by boat every day from Corfu.
