5 best Greek islands to visit in spring

Corfu ● Crete ● Hydra ● Santorini ● Skopelos ● 01 March 2018

Vacation in the low season is fascinating: mild temperatures, low prices in accommodation and food, relaxing atmosphere and the feeling of rebirth and happiness... This is spring in Greece, and you can choose one of these beautiful Greek islands to spend a few days away from mass tourism, finding super deals and enjoying the sun and the gorgeous pictures of Greek nature.

Hydra has a picturesque port with stone-built mansions, paved streets and elegant shops. Only 2 hours from Athens, Hydra is the island where cars are prohibited, and you can go wherever you want by donkey! Thus, you have there a true connection with nature and calm attitude. Besides, Hydra is more famous for its neoclassical settlement than its beaches, so you can spend a weekend in this stunning town walking around and having fun.

Built on the slopes of the volcanic caldera, Santorini is the ultimate island to just relax, enjoy the magnificent view and get lost in this beauty. Most travellers love the villages with their whitewashed houses at the edge of the volcano (Fira, Imerovigli and Oia) and are not impressed by Santorini's beaches. In my opinion, the beaches of Santorini are astonishing with their imposing landscape and the black sand, but one thing is for sure. You can just relax in your hotel with this breathtaking view and spend your day in Fira or Oia, where there are numerous options to eat or drink. Plus, until May, Santorini is calmer than during the high-season and you can see its authentic side.

Crete is renowned for its archaeological sites as well as its nature. Both, you can do in this season. You can visit Knossos or Phaistos and learn about the Minoan civilisation that changed the history of Aegean Sea. Very interesting is also the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, where you can admire the Phaistos disk. If you love hiking, spring is ideal to hike Samaria Gorge or make beautiful routes on foot in White Mountains. Crete offers the visitor thousands of options in addition to its exotic beaches, so you don't have to spend the whole day by the sea. But if you like swimming, the pleasant temperatures of Crete even during winter make it possible to visit a beach, especially in the southern side of Crete, which overlooks Africa and the Libyan Sea and has warm waters.

Corfu Town is World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is a captivating town with Italian-style architecture, impressive mansions and cobblestone paths. This town is particularly beautiful in spring and especially in Easter, when people from all over Greece gather to celebrate with local customs. The island is also very beautiful with verdant nature and valleys full of colourful flowers. Corfu is a large island, so you can rent a car to discover it and be impressed by its beautiful villages outside Corfu Town.

Skopelos is famous all over Greece for its lush greenery and its traditional harbour. It is a calm settlement, where you can relax, eat fresh fish by the sea and enjoy the gorgeous view of the Aegean. It is also very interesting to rent a car and drive through the island to admire the green beaches, slopes and coves, where the film Mamma Mia was shot.
