5 reasons that make Greek islands so unique

Aegean islands ● Cyclades ● Dodecanese ● Ionian islands ● Sporades ● 08 July 2017

Why are the Greek islands so unique? Why do so many tourists from all over the world come to visit Sporades, Cyclades, Dodecanese and Ionian Islands? The truth is that the islands of the Aegean and the Ionian Sea are considered among the best destinations worldwide. Is it their atmosphere, their crystal waters, the hospitality of the locals or something else? It is difficult to explain in exact words their beauty and popularity, but we can try describing you some characteristics that make Greek islands so charming.

1. Traditional villages and towns

The villages of the Greek islands are one of a kind. Neoclassical towns amphitheatrically built on the slope, such as Ermoupolis Syros, Symi and Skiathos Town, seaside villages with white-washed houses and chapels, such as Mykonos Town or Naxos Chora, cosmopolitan well-preserved towns surrounded by lush greenery, such as Corfu Town or Fiskardo in Kefalonia, medieval towns and Venetian castles, such as Rhodes Old Town and Kastro in Sifnos, or elegant white villages at the edge of the cliff, such as Fira Santorini or Folegandros Chora, create a scenery you have never seen before.

2. Natural beauty

The natural beauty of the Greek islands is unique and has great variety. Rocky coves, long sandy beaches, volcanos (in Santorini, Milos and Nisyros), gorges, high mountains, rivers, lakes and cliffs create a landscape of extraordinary beauty.

3. Different styles

The Greek islands offer an amazing variety in every field. Rocky, sandy or green beaches, secluded or organised shores, small or large islands, islands for couples, for families or for partying, landscape with lush greenery or wild, dry beauty, elegant Choras and crowded resorts are only some of the different things a Greek island can offer to you.

4. Significant historical sites

The Aegean Islands were home to important ancient civilisations. Ancient Kamiros in Rhodes, Akrotiri Minoan Site (Santorini), Portara in Naxos, Delos or Asklepieion in Kos are just a few paradigms of the numerous archaeological sites that especially Cyclades and Dodecanese have.
