5 things to do in Nafplion

Nafplion ● 09 March 2017

Nafplion is one of the most beautiful towns in a close distance to Athens. In Argolis in eastern Peloponnese, it is among the best destinations in mainland Greece for a weekend or relaxing vacations by the sea. This romantic city is ideal for couples and people, who want to get rest, walk around the paved streets and explore the history and culture of Peloponnese and Greece. The medieval atmosphere together with the nostalgic aura of the Old Town, the cosmopolitanism and the mixture of old history make this trip the perfect spot for everyone, who wants something more than just sea and warm sun.

1. The Old Town

The Old Town of Nafplion is one of the best-preserved towns in Greece, with neoclassical buildings, impressive squares and paved streets. It combines the romantic ambience with a modern side, sophisticated art places, vibrant life and rich history in every corner. This idyllic city has many historical buildings with colourful bougainvilleas and the cobblestone promenade around them is a must. Furthermore, the Old Town is full of cosy cafes, restaurants, bars and traditional shops with local products.

2. The historical buildings

Among the many historical buildings that Nafplion Town has to offer, worth visiting are the building of the first Greek Parliament, the Archaeological Museum, the old mosque and the church of St. Spyridon, where Ioannis Kapodistrias was murdered. Don’t forget to visit also the Komboloi museum to admire a collection of about 700 different beads. Syntagma Square is the most popular gathering spot of Nafplion Town, where the locals and the travellers spend some time to relax and drink coffee.

3. Mpourtzi Castle

The tiny island with Mpourtzi, the Venetian water castle, which you can see from the promenade by the sea, is a hallmark of the city. A great excursion is to take the boat from the harbour and visit it to watch Nafplion from there. This castle operates also as a museum, where you can learn about the history and the Venetian occupation in the area.

4. Palamidi Fortress

Palamidi, the Venetian fortress to the east of the Acronauplia, is also a spot you should climb up. It is a typical baroque fortress, which was built by the Venetians, then captured by the Turks and remained under their control until 1821 and the Greek War of Independence. From there up to the hill, you can enjoy the magnificent view of Nafplion Town on your feet.

5. The beaches

Apart from a popular weekend destination during autumn, winter and spring, Nafplion is also a great place for summer holidays thanks to its lovely beach resorts. The coasts of Argolis have crystal clear waters and all touristic facilities. The most beautiful beaches in a close distance to Nafplion Town are Tolon Nafplion, Kandia and Nea Kios.
