5 things to do in Skopelos

Skopelos ● Sporades ● 10 April 2018

Skopelos is located in Sporades in the Pagasetic Gulf near Volos. It is a beautiful island with lush greenery, a lovely neoclassical port and exotic beaches that steal your heart. These are the top things to do in Skopelos.

Church of Agios Ioannis in Kastri

If you have seen the film Mamma Mia, which was shot in Skopelos, there is no possibility that you haven't be captivated by the small chapel at the top of the cliff in the last scenes of the film, where the wedding took place. This wonderful church (its English name: Saint John on the Castle) is located on the northern side of the island offering a romantic scenery and a magnificent sea view.

Town

Skopelos town is the first thing of the island you will see as it is also its port. It is a picturesque settlement with well-preserved neoclassical houses, built amphitheatrically around a lovely bay. Balconies with flowers, fountains, narrow paved streets, alleys, old churches and elegant shops constitute the atmosphere of Skopelos town. On the top of the cliff, you can see ruins of the Medieval Castle, which dates back in the 13th century.

Monasteries

Generally, Skopelos has many medieval Greek orthodox monasteries, which are situated in a wonderful scenery and are definitely worth visiting. The Monastery of Agia Varvara has well-preserved frescoes that date back in the 15th century, while the neighbouring Monastery of Metamorfosi of the 16th century has a rare collection of icons and paintings. The Monasteries of Taxiarches impresses the visitor not only with its beauty but also for the trekking path inside the verdant nature that one should follow because the road ends up in a certain point. The Monastery of Timios Prodromos is worth visiting due to its museum, which hosts old papers, relics and other ecclesiastical items. The Monastery of Evangelistria, which dates back in the 18th century, gives the traveller a gorgeous view of the entire island.

Folklore Museum

The Folklore Museum is housed in an impressive mansion of the 18th century in the town of Skopelos. Its exhibits are costumes, ceramics, paintings, icons and old furniture that show the life of the island in the past centuries and give you a good overview of its newest history.

Best beaches

Skopelos is renowned for its exotic beaches with the emerald waters and the white sand surrounded by pine trees.  Most of the beaches, like Panormos, Milia, Stafilos and Hovolo are partly organised with sunbeds, umbrellas and taverns. If you like privacy, there are secluded bays, such as Agnontas, Agios Ioannis, Armenopetra and Glyfoneri that are also nudism-friendly.
