5 things you can do only in Greece

Greece ● 26 July 2017

You may have heard about Greece, about its beautiful islands and beaches and its long history, but you may also wonder what is so special with that country. The sun, the sea, the food and the museums? Yes and no. Greece is all of the abovementioned but also something more. Greece can offer you the opportunity to have unique experiences, do cool things and live moments you have never imagined. Are you ready?

1. See ancient theatre performances where they were born

In your school, you have learned about Sophocles, Euripides and Aristophanes. If you have classical studies, you have been taught the tragedies Antigone, Medea or Oedipus. If you are a fan of theatre, it is possible you have seen the great ancient dramas in performances in your country. But in Greece, you can do something impressive. Watch these tragedies or comedies in the place where they were played for the first time, where their creator had shown them to the public and had participated with them in the contests of ancient Greece. In the ancient theatre of Epidavros, in a wonderful position, which is located only 2 hours from Athens, you can spend amazing hours that are a part of the glorious antiquity.

2. See many islands during your holidays

Greek islands are located very close to each other and ferries have flexible schedule. With the island passes of Hostelbay, you can visit the one island after another paying only for the one route, having the ultimate island-hopping experience!

3. Climb on the mountain of Gods

According to the Greek religion and mythology, Mount Olympus was the home of the Twelve Olympian Gods, who settled on its highest peak after Titanomachy. The name of this peak was Pantheon, and it was the meeting place of the Gods and the throne of Zeus. The landscape and the natural beauty of Mount Olympus is unique in Europe, and every year as well in the winter as in the summer, thousands of people visit it to admire its rich fauna and flora with their several species, to hike on its slopes and reach its peaks.

4. Enjoy mountain and then water sports

Greece is a mountainous country, but at the same time, the largest distance from a mountain to the sea is only one hour, while on some mountains, like Pilion Volos, you can hike, ski, mountain bike or kayak having a magnificent sea view and then, easily go for swimming and sunbathing.

5. Walk through the traces of history

Greece was home to one of the most influential civilisations of the world. Most historical sites in Greece offer you the opportunity to walk around the area, admire the monuments and learn about their history in the position where it was born. For example, Pnyx in Athens is the place, where ancient Athenians voted and democracy was established, and it is located at the top of a hill in Athens Center, where ancient philosophers and orators, like Demosthenes, pronounced their speeches.
