Athens is a fascinating city with so much more to explore than just the ancient sights! Despite the amazing history of the city, you will be spoiled by choice with the modern, hip side of this city. Here is a short list of what not to miss when travelling to Athens!

Open Air Cinemas

Although is is a seasonal experience, it should be top on your list of things to do in Athens! From late April until the beginning of October search for the nearest open air cinema close to where you stay! If you stay downtown the open air cinemas in Thissio and around Acropolis offer an amazing view to Parthenon and this is far more important than an Oscar movie in the big screen in front of you! Sit on the comfortable chairs outside, take your drink from the bar and relax. You are in Athens and locals love being outside enjoying the wonderful weather. If you are lucky enough, you might see the full moon decorating your sky! An absolute must when you travel to Athens!

Hip Neighbourhoods of Athens

Apart from Plaka, Thissio, Monastiraki and Psiri areas that most tourists know when they travel to Athens, there are so many other beautiful neighbourhoods that locals love and chose for a night out or a relaxing walk during the day. Koukaki area just at the foothill of Filopappou Hill next to Acropolis is a hip neighbourhood that has a relaxing vibe, yet a classic aristocratic touch of the old Athenian days. Wonderful architecture, trendy bars and taverns with homemade food, friendly residents and all these just a breath away from Acropolis and next to a couple of Metro stations. Exploring the secret neighbourhoods of Athens is what will make your stay a really good experience.
Other nice areas to explore are Exarchia, the cultural hub of the city, Gazi right next to Thissio, Mets behind the Panathenaic stadium and Kerameikos where you will find the best graffiti artists of the city and some great street food.

Microbrewery and fusion Greek cuisine

Discover the authentic taste of Greece and search for the new food scene of Athens and Greece. You will find some surprisingly good and delicious dishes you did not know that you could ever find based on fresh local products from around the country. The Greek cuisine is not only about souvlaki and mousaka, and offers some of the top quality food experiences you can have when travelling! Fine dining in Athens is at its best and make sure you find one good restaurant to try some of the best foody experiences. Do not forget to ask for local beer that is made in Greek microbreweries around the country. There are around 40 different brands and all of excellent taste!

Cycling in Athens

Despite the fact that cycling lanes are not plenty in Athens, you will find some fantastic routes to cycle. Easy rides around the unique archeological sights will make your trip unforgettable. Some highly recommended routes to do cycling in Athens are from the brand new Niarchos Foundation cultural centre -where you can even rent your bike!- until Gazi area, all the way on a cycling lane, Thissio, Monastiraki and Sydagma areas and in Athens Riviera, along the coastlines from Palaio Faliro to Glyfada or from Palaio Faliro to Mikrolimano and Peiraias.
