6 things to do in Heraklion

Crete ● Heraklion ● 06 March 2017

Heraklion is the largest town of Crete and a region with many tourist resorts, like Matala and Hersonissos Heraklion (Crete), as well as important archaeological monuments and astonishing beaches.

1. The town and the fortress

Heraklion is the capital of Crete and its largest city. In Heraklion, there are many well-preserved buildings and elements of traditional architecture, as well as restaurants, cafes and bars. However, Heraklion is a busy city, and you have to keep in mind that there are problems like traffic jam and lack of parking. The most wonderful spot of the town is the Venetian Fortress of Koules, which is the symbol of Heraklion. It was constructed by the Venetians in the 13th century, and it stands at the entrance of the port as the trademark of the harbour.

2. The archaeological sites of Knossos and Faistos

The archaeological sites of Knossos and Faistos belong also to the best things to do in Heraklion (Crete). In Knossos, you will visit the Palace of Knossos that is a magnificent testament of the Minoan civilisation. In Phaistos, there are ruins of a Minoan Palace, and the place is not as crowded as the Palace of Knossos. You can explore the central courtyard, the royal apartments and the location where the famous Phaistos Disc was uncovered in 1903.

3. The Archaeological Museum

If you are interested in the antiquity, a must-see in Heraklion town (Crete), apart from the above sites, is the Archaeological Museum with its extensive collection of Minoan art. The highlights are the small statue of the Snake Goddess and the Phaistos Disc, a clay tablet with symbols of the writing system Linear A, which has not been deciphered.

4. Cretaquarium

If you are an animal lover, the Cretaquarium is a perfect spot to spend the day. It is located 15 km east of Heraklion (Crete), and it is home to 2000 sea animals and 200 different Mediterranean species. This excursion is ideal for families because kids love this place.

5. The best beaches

On the northern and the southern side of Heraklion, there are numerous amazing beaches that are famous all over Greece. Matala, Malia, Agia Pelagia, Amoudara, Hersonissos and Stalida are only some of the beach resorts that will offer you unforgettable moments. Long and sandy, with crystal waters, all beaches near Heraklion are well organised, with hotels, restaurants, beach bars, sunbeds and water sports facilities.
