6 top religious destinations in Greece

Aegina ● Meteora ● Mount Athos ● Paros ● Patmos ● Tinos ● 16 December 2016

Greece has a strong spiritual and religious character, and many of its places are important religious centres in Europe.

1. Patmos Island

On Patmos, you will be impressed by the quiet and mystical vibes of the island, and you can visit sacred places that attract not only Christians but also atheists, who want to feel the inexplicable aura of the island. The Monastery of Saint John the Theologian and the Cave of Apocalypse, where he wrote the Apocalypse, are the best sites to explore, and they will make you understand the reputation of Patmos.

2. Meteora

In a region of almost inaccessible sandstone peaks, monks settled on these cliffs since the 11th century. Although today only 6 monasteries operate, they form the second largest monastic community in Greece, after Mount Athos. The view from the top of the rocks is breathtaking. If you want to relax and find the peace in your soul, Meteora is the place to be.

3. Tinos Island

The Church of Panagia (Virgin Mary) Megalochari on Tinos is the most popular pilgrimage in Greece. The most sensational thing about that is that many pilgrims cover the distance from the port to the church, which is located on the top of a hill above Chora, the main town of Tinos, on their knees. The icon of the church is considered to be miraculous, and many Christians from all over the world leave their offerings on that icon.

4. Paros Island

On Paros, in Paroikia, the capital and the main port of the island, is located the Monastery of Panagia Ekatontapiliani, one of the best-preserved Paleo-Christian monuments in Greece. The original church was constructed in the 4th century A.D. During the Byzantine Period, were performed many reformations to the church, and today, it is a complex of Paleo-Christian, Byzantine and post-Byzantine elements.

5. Aegina Island

The Monastery of Saint Nektarios on Aegina is the most important religious monument in a short distance from Athens. It was founded by the bishop of the area, Nektarios, who was officially recognised as a Saint in 1961, 41 years after his death. Saint Nektarios was a popular priest and educator at the beginning of the 20th century, and he is also known for the innumerable miracles and his healing abilities.

6. Mount Athos

Mount Athos is a peninsula in northern Greece and the most salient monastic centre in the country. It is governed as an autonomous polity, and only males are permitted to visit the territory. Everyone, who visits this complex of monasteries, should follow during his visit the life and the program of the monasteries and live for these days as a monk. This experience is something unique even for the most sceptical visitors.
