9 things to see in Samos

Samos ● 14 April 2018

Samos is an island in Aegean Sea, close to Turkey, which is characterised by well-preserved villages, gorgeous beaches with crystal waters and rich history with many significant historical sites and museums. Read here about the best things you can do in Samos.

Vathy is the capital and the main port of the island. It is a lovely town around a bay with magnificent sea view. Venetian, neoclassical and modern buildings constitute a fascinating settlement with many touristic facilities, such as hotels, restaurants and bars. The promenade at the beachfront and the narrow streets inside the town is a must!

Kokkari is a fishing village with a great atmosphere. Fishing boats and yachts, taverns by the sea and bars with cocktails create the perfect summer scenery. Vineyards and beaches with pine trees and crystal waters are around Kokkari, which is a popular resort and offers various amenities.

Karlovasi is the prettiest village of Samos. Stone mansions, lush greenery, impressive churches, waterfalls, neoclassical houses and a Byzantine castle are exactly what you want to take perfect photos.

Pythagoreion, the second port of Samos, has a very nice beachfront, traditional architecture and amazing atmosphere.  It is the homeland of philosopher and scientist Pythagoras, from whom it took its name. Don't miss it!

Tunnel of Eupalinos

The most impressive sample of the ancient history of the island is the Tunnel of Eupalinos, the cradle of engineering. Eupalinos, the genius engineer from Megara, managed to dig a tunnel through a mountain using basic measuring tools and complex mathematical calculations. Two teams were digging their way through the mountain, and they managed to meet midway in this tunnel of 1,036 metres length and 1,80 metres width and height, after having extracted 7,000 cubic metres of rock.

Heraion Sanctuary

Heraion is also an ancient site you should definitely visit. In Herodotus day, Heraion was the biggest temple in Greece, but today the temple is destroyed, and only one column is left. Heraion Sanctuary, which was dedicated to goddess Hera, is believed to be the place where Zeus and Hera had spent their honeymoon. You can also admire the Sacred Road, which in antiquity connected the city of Pythagoreion with the temple.

Archaeological Museum

The Archaeological Museum in Vathy is a very interesting museum you should visit. It hosts a 5,25-metre-tall kouros statue, but it has also other important findings, such as jewellery, tools and ceramics from the Prehistoric till the Hellenistic times.

Museum of National History

The Museum of National History in Mytilinii village is the perfect spot for you and your family where you can learn everything about the flora and fauna of the island. A private, rare collection of minerals, stones and fossils of animals are hosted in this museum and will impress you!

Tour to Kusadasi

Samos is located very close to Turkey and specifically to Kusadasi. Daily tours are organised from Pythagoreion to Kusadasi, where you can admire the ancient site of Ephesus, walk around the beautiful city and enjoy the Turkish market and cuisine.
