Aegean or Ionian islands? This is the answer to the tricky question

Aegean islands ● Ionian islands ● 15 May 2017

Greece has numerous islands for every taste. We know that it is really difficult to decide which island to choose for your vacations this summer. We all have the same problem. However, before you decide your destination, there is the first question you have to answer: Aegean Islands or Ionian Islands? The answer is simple if you know exactly what you want and expect from your summer holidays because these two groups of islands have some significant differences between each other.

The Ionian Islands have a unique character. The characteristic of their landscape is the lush greenery. Pine trees and cedar trees until the coastline is a usual picture of the beaches in the Ionian Sea, and thus, the waters of these beaches have an amazing turquoise colour. Furthermore, the trees create shadow, which is perfect if you have travelled with your children. You can just lie under a tree, relaxing and avoiding the warm sun and the danger of sunstroke. It is not a coincidence that most of the family-friendly Greek islands, such as Lefkada and Zakynthos, are located in the Ionian Sea.

Furthermore, the Ionian Islands have extraordinary natural and urban beauty. Some of the worldwide famous Greek beaches, like Myrtos in Kefalonia, Shipwreck Beach in Zakynthos and Egremni in Lefkada, are located in the Ionian Islands. The villages and towns of the Ionian Islands have kept their traditional character, which is of Venetian and Italian style, like the Old Town in Corfu and Fiskardo in Kefalonia.

On the other hand, the Aegean Islands have a totally different aura. The landscape there is dry, wild and on many islands, such as Santorini, Milos and Nisyros, volcanic. Especially in Cyclades, there are extensive areas without any tree. The beaches are the perfect place to sunbathe, but thanks to the breeze and the wind of the Aegean Sea, the temperature is not insufferable. Under these circumstances, the islands of Cyclades and Dodecanese are ideal for young people, for couples as well as party animals.

The beauty of the Aegean Islands is also something unique that you can fall in love with. Endless blue, steep cliffs, white or black sand and the charm or mystery of the Aegean Sea, the cradle of the Greek and Western civilisation. In the Aegean Islands, you can visit many significant archaeological sites, such as Delos, Akrotiri Minoan Site (Santorini) and Portara (Naxos). Another advantage of the Aegean Islands is that many of them, such as Kea, Kythnos, Serifos and Androsare located in a close distance to Athens.

Although the urban and natural beauty of the Ionian Islands is something indisputable, they are similar to many destinations in Italy. On the contrary, the Aegean Islands have a different character that can be found only there. The beaches are impressive, many of them with lunar landscape, imposing rocks and extraordinary scenery. Furthermore, the villages and towns of the Aegean Islands, and especially of Cyclades, is also something that can be found only in Greece. Whitewashed houses on the top of a cliff or by the sea, narrow cobblestone streets and bougainvilleas hanging on the colourful balconies create the exact picture of the Greek summer.
