Athens is the World Book Capital for 2018!

Athens ● 21 April 2018

Athens is a major cultural destination, and its distinction as UNESCO World Book Capital for this year, starting from April, confirms that.

The central slogan of Athens World Book Capital 2018 is "Books everywhere!". It is an ambitious initiative, which aims to provide knowledge and entertainment to everyone, who is interested, such as residents, visitors of the city, citizens in need and refugees. It also connects the written world of books with other forms of expression and art, such as films, dance and theatre.

The events start on April 23, which is the World Book and Copyright Day, and will run for the whole year. Athens is the 18th city to be honoured as World Book Capital. This celebration started in 2001 in Madrid, and the UNESCO selection of Athens was announced in September 2016. This selection was made on the basis of a proposal, which was organised by the Municipal Authority of Athens as a plan with focus on books, narrative and culture.

This distinction is a great opportunity to boost the dynamic character of Athens and promote the Greek capital as a cultural destination not only for its ancient history but also for its modern present. One year after hosting the renowned event of Contemporary Art, Documenta 14, Athens is evolving in a platform of creative expression and global dialogue, earning a significant role in European culture as an upcoming hospitable, safe and vibrant destination.

During the next months, there will be collaborations between public organisations and foundations, festivals and local creative groups, discussion events, book readings at unexpected locations and artistic happenings. Famous and acclaimed authors from all over the world will come to Athens and participate in many events. Among others, you can meet Claudio Magris, George Saunders, Pierre Lemaitre and Ian MacEwan.

The program comprises more than 250 events, all free of charge, and they are constantly enriched. People will have an amazing experience and be part of this initiative, which can be formed by their inspiration and participation. This creative force is the best way to have unforgettable holidays in Athens and combine them with moments of true culture and art.
