Athens street food: the ultimate culinary experience

Athens ● 02 August 2017

Athens has an excellent and affordable cuisine, and its visitors can enjoy delicious food in one of the numerous restaurants all over the city, in various districts of Athens. The most popular street food dish is souvlaki, which costs only 2-3€. Chicken or pork meat, combined with tzatziki, tomato, French fries and onion, is wrapped in a pita. It is cheap, delicious and the perfect food after alcohol, but also for every moment during the day. Souvlaki is very nutritious, and it can keep you with full stomach for many hours, giving you on a budget the energy you want for sightseeing. The most famous district for souvlaki is Monastiraki, and especially Mitropoleos Street, where are located some of the oldest and best taverns with souvlaki in Athens. Remember, however, that you can find souvlaki, the favourite meal in Greece, in every district and suburb of Athens.

Late at night, after your bar-hopping in Athens, when you are drunk and want something to eat, vromiko is a perfect solution. It consists of hot dogs and sandwiches with various sauces and caramelised onions, is served from food trucks until the early hours and costs maximum 5€. The best places to eat vromiko are Mavili Square, in a close distance to Kolonaki, and Michalakopoulou Street, behind Hilton, where famous food trucks are located.

The last years, there is a new trend in Athens with restaurants that offer dishes from alternative cuisines from all over the world. Peruvian, Japanese, Chinese, Indian, Hawaian, African, Argentinean, Turkish, Arabic, Spanish, Mexican and American restaurants with burgers are opening in Athens Center, going the culinary experience in Athens a step further. The good news are also that these restaurants have the style of the street food, where everyone can have lunch or dinner on a reasonable budget. For Asian street food, the best place is Apollonos Street, a tiny street near Syntagma Square, where you can find Korean, Chinese, Indian, Japanese and Vietnamese food in traditional restaurants. Other districts, where you can find various local cuisines and many burger restaurants, are Gazi, Kolonaki and Metaxourgio.

This new trend of alternative cuisines can also be found in Street Food Festival of Athens. Every May, for three long weekends, in an alternative location in an old hack stand in Gkazi, near Keramikos Archealogical site, more than 40,000 thousand visitors in a festive atmosphere taste Hawaian sushi, Peruvian, Indian, Mexican, Argentinean and Arab cuisine spending only 15-20€ per person. In June, is organised in Technopolis Gazi the Burger Festival, where top chefs cook burger with various, delicious ingredients.
