Athens: why I'm in love with this city

Athens ● 04 June 2017

I was born in Athens, and I live here for 30 years. I know the history of this city like my own history, and I have experienced every small, great, amazing or bad moment of Athens. I was teenager and volunteer in the Olympic Games of Athens in 2004, and I wished every night that Athens would be a famous city all over the world and not only a stop-over for the main vacations in the islands of Greece. My dream came true, and now, Athens is one of the most popular touristic destinations. I see crowds of people every day in Plaka, Monastiraki, Thiseio and Acropolis, and I am moved because so many people appreciate the city I'm in love with. Because I was there when Athens was an inconspicuous city, with traffic jam, air-pollution, abandoned buildings and without infrastructures. But now, Athens after the Olympic Games is another city, and is really difficult for me to count all the reasons that make me love so much this place.

Is the impressive history of Athens that has left its traces everywhere, with significant sites and museums? Are the galleries and the street art that are perfect for the lovers of culture? Are the beaches near Athens that make you feel like being on an island? Or maybe the nightlife of Athens, with its amazing live stages and the numerous opportunities for bar-hopping? And what about the nature of Athens, which is so wonderful that you cannot imagine it is located in a big capital?

The answer is yes and no. Of course, all these advantages of Athens are unbeatable and can hardly be found in other places. Athens offers its visitors very interesting things to do, and the truth is that due to its rich history and culture, its vivid nightlife and its innumerable alternatives and activities, the visitor of Athens needs many days to explore it and get everything the city can give to him/her.

However, Athens has something more than all the above mentioned. Athens is its atmosphere, its positive vibes, its craziness and its unpredictable character. It is the feeling when you walk in its districts and streets that something new waits for you in the corner. An alternative café, a shop with things you couldn't imagine they exist, a well-preserved neoclassical building next to a modern one. The combination of new and old. And the hospitality and the warm heartedness of the people. Athenians have a very busy life. But they will always stop to help you and show you the secrets of their city. Athens is above all an idea.
