The fact that Greece has great prettiness to show off is no exaggeration. Beyond its astonishing islands, which are even more gorgeous and popular during the summer and spring months, Greece has many distinct spots on its mainland. Surely, most of you have heard about Karpenision or the lake of Ioannina, but did you know that Meteora, Mani, Crete and Zagorochoria, hide unique exquisiteness?

Meteora

Just outside Kalambaka, a cluster of huge rocks rises and forms the imposing Meteora. Meteora has been declared a UNESCO World Conservation and Protection Monument and, after Mount Athos, it is the largest monastery site in Greece. According to the geologists' theories, the wild rocks of Meteora that make up this eerie landscape were created by river stones and limestone rocks that have accumulated at that point for millions of years.

Cape Tenaro

At the end of Mani and the mainland of Greece stands Cape Tenaro. A visitor can see a lot of interesting attractions in the area. It is a place unique in natural beauty and with significant archaeological findings. It is the southernmost end of Europe and the Balkan Peninsula, while for the ancient Greeks it was the crossing point for the kingdom of Hades, the god of the Under World. The ancient ancestors placed there the gates of Hades, from where Hercules brought down Kerberos (a mythical 3 headed dog) in one of his famous labours.  According to Strabo sailors were calculating seafaring distances from Cape Tenaro. During the Ottoman domination, it was the base of the pirates of Mani and the sailors made sure to sail away from the stem so as not to be the victims of piracy. While in the area you should also visit a place called Vathia which resists vigorously over time with the imposing fortress towers, a characteristic landscape throughout the whole Laconian Mani. Don’t forget to get to Areopolis and Limeni as well preferably to watch the sunset or to relax and go out after a long day at the beach!

Samaria Gorge

The Samaria Gorge is Europe's most famous hiking gorge, forming part of the E4 European path. Thousands of tourists walk it down on foot in the summer. For many, this is also the main purpose of their visit to Crete.  You can find it on the south side of the prefecture of Chania. It was created by the river flowing between the White Mountains and Mount Volakias. There are several other gorges in Samaria, perpendicular to the main gorge, but they are mainly technical (they require cords for canyoning).  Flora and fauna in the Samaria National Park are extremely rich. There, you will find unique plants and other living species protected by international conventions.

Zagorohoria

Zagorohoria is a network of 46 beautiful villages, offering a variety of choices for every taste. Villages with vivid lifestyle or tranquillity, villages with an incredible view or others hidden deep in the forest. Forests but also dry peaks, crystal clear rivers like Voidomatis and alpine lakes will make this trip a memorable experience. The Vikos Gorge is also a terminus worth visiting not only to see but also to walk, as it is crossed by a marked European trail. Do try the traditional food of the region, you’ll get fascinated by the famous pies and spoon sweets. This destination is a must visit for those seeking for adventure. Activities such as rafting, climbing, horse riding etc. will get you going. You should taste the local tsipouro as well. This drink is a typical Greek expression of treat and hospitality and has for centuries been able to unite people! Cheers!
