Chalkidiki (Sithonia): what to do and what to eat in the beautiful peninsula

Chalkidiki ● 01 October 2017

The prefecture of Chalkidiki in a close distance to Thessaloniki in northern Greece, is a very popular summer destination, and attracts visitors from many countries. It consists of three peninsulas, Chalkidiki,Sithonia, Kassandra and Mount Athos. Lush greenery, long sandy beaches with crystal clear waters, nice seaside villages, creative cuisine in modern restaurants and high-standards hotels in Chalkidiki.  What else do you need for amazing vacations?

Chalkidiki,Sithonia is the second leg of the peninsula, a place which is characterised for its well-preserved settlements and the stunning beaches.

The old settlement of Nikiti features delightful two-storey houses and narrow paved streets, while the traditional village of Parthenonas is a great spot to enjoy nature and the magnificent view of Toroneos Gulf. Chalkidiki,Sithonia is also popular for its wine, and the wineries there can offer you a great wine-tasting experience as well as let you know about the wine-making process. Domaine Porto Carras winery is the biggest winery of the area as well as the largest organic winery in Greece.

Of course, swimming in the astonishing sea of Chalkidiki and lying on the exotic beaches of Chalkidiki,Sithonia is the best thing you can do in the peninsula. Pyrgos Beach is a fine spot to swim, and it is home to a modern beach bar, which hosts every year the Beach Food Festival. The eastern and southern part of the peninsula has a cluster of some of the leading beaches in Greece. In the Vourvourou area, Karydi is exotic. Koutloumousiou beach has emerald waters, and Manassou as well as Zografou beaches have popular beach bars.

Kavourotrypes is a totally different beach than the usual beaches of Chalkidiki. Rocky, small coves create an extraordinary scenery, which impresses with its beauty, but the most unusual spot in Kavourotrypes is the rock, which has been chiselled into a statue of a mermaid lying by the sea.

Chalkidiki,Sithonia is famous all over Greece for its camping areas. Armenistis is considered to be the most youthful beach in the area thanks to the popular among young people camping that is situated behind the beach as well as its water sports amenities. Kalamitsi is the counterweight to Armenistis, has a camping too and beach courts to spend your whole day playing beach volley or beach soccer by the sea. The beach of Kalamitsi is really imposing with its magnitude that reminds of the huge beaches on the ocean and the pine forest that surrounds the landscape.

In regard to the food, Boukadoura in Elia Nikitis is one of the finest restaurants with Greek cuisine in the country. Squirrel in Nikiti offers a special experience as it is situated in a magical veranda and serves world-class menu, such as sea bass with dukkah crust, accompanied by a jamon and banana puree. Treehouse is literally built on a tree, while Kymata is located in a small harbour of Neos Marmaras and has fresh fish and seafood. Ouzeri of Dimitris focuses on rare seafood, such as sea violets, royal oysters and ark clams.
