Discover Peloponnese off-the-beaten-track

Mani ● Peloponnese ● Pylos ● 10 July 2017

Peloponnese is an amazing area of Greece, with numerous things to do, astonishing beaches and important archaeological sites.  It is also a region with wonderful coastal villages and towns, where you can spend a weekend or more days to relax, enjoy the natural beauty and have unforgettable moments with your family or partner. Peloponnese is a very popular area mainly among the Athenians, but it has managed to keep its authentic character. In Peloponnese, you can find many authentic destinations for off-the-beaten-path vacations that will show you many unspoiled places away from the crowds.

Ancient Korinthos

Korinthos was one of the largest city states (polis) in ancient Greece. In this archaeological site, you can see the well-preserved Temple of Apollo, the ruins of Lerna Theatre, the Pirini Fountain, the museum and Acrocorinth, the Acropolis of ancient Korinthos.

Mani

Mani, the middle peninsula of Peloponnese, represents the wild site of Peloponnese  and is a treasure of Byzantine churches, castles and towers. Mani is a complex of villages in Messinia and Lakonia, and among the most impressive villages by the sea, are considered Gerolimenas, Limeni and Areopolis Mani. Stone-built houses, narrow streets, traditional shops, local products and the clearest sea-water in whole Peloponnese make these places popular in summer as well as in winter.

Temple of Apollo Epicurius

The temple was dedicated to Apollo the Healer and is located at Bassae, an archaeological site in Messinia, Peloponnese. This site was the first in Greece that UNESCO inscribed in its World Heritage List. Pausanias considered it to be one of the finest temples in Peloponnese thanks to its beauty, harmony and the combination of the Archaic with the Doric style.

Pylos

Pylos is a coastal town in Messinia that is ideal for relaxation, walks in narrow streets and dinner in a fish tavern by the sea, watching the sunset. In a close distance to Pylos, you can visit two castle-towns, Koroni and Methoni Messinia, where you will experience the Medieval aura of the area. Furthermore, you can swim in Foinikounta, a popular beach with many touristic facilities, as well as in Voidokilia, onε of the best beaches in Greece.

The Monastery of Mega Spileo

The Holy Monastery of Mega Spileo is the oldest orthodox monastery in Greece. It is located 10 km from Kalavrita, and it was built in 362 A.D. on a rocky hill, at height of 924 m. Its architecture reminds of a fortress, and it is worth mentioning that the monastery was constructed by two brothers when a shepherd girl found miraculously an icon of Virgin Mary inside a cave. It is believed that Apostle Luke painted the icon.

The cog train from Diakofto

The cog train from Diakofto in Achaia covers a distance of about 22 km from Diakofto to Kalavrita. It is one of the most beautiful trips in Greece because the train passes through rare natural sceneries and picturesque villages like Zachlorou.
