Easter on Corfu: an unforgettable experience you should not miss

Corfu ● Ionian islands ● 07 April 2017

Corfu is an amazing island with many things to do and significant attractions, but the celebration of Easter, which is accompanied with impressive customs and traditions, is a unique experience for every traveller. Corfu is also for the Greek people the most popular destination for the celebration of Easter, and this fact shows the potential of the island during this period of time.

Colourful alleyways, pedestrian streets, imposing fortresses and buildings with magnificent arched facades. This is Corfu, with a sense of nobility and charming secrets. The most important attractions of Corfu are Mon Repos Palace, which hosts the Paleopolis Archaeological Museum, Spianada Square (Corfu), the enormous and extremely beautiful square in the Old Town Corfu, the Museum of Asian Art in the Palace of St. Michel and St. George and the beautiful islet of Pontikonisi (Corfu). Don't forget to visit also the Old Fortress, built on a rocky peninsula with a panoramic view of the city and the sea, as well as the New Fortress, where exhibitions and concerts are staged. The concerts in Corfu are popular thanks to the philharmonic orchestras of the island, which play a prominent role in the local celebrations and cultural events.

Easter events on Corfu begin to peak on Good Friday with the Epitaphios procession around the Old Town Corfu, accompanied with philharmonic orchestras and choirs. On Easter Saturday, at 6 am, a re-enactment of the earthquake that the Gospel says followed the Resurrection of Jesus takes places at the church of Panagia ton Xenon, and at 11 am, at the church of St. Spyridon, the biggest and most famous church of the island, which is dedicated to the patron saint of Corfu, is held the First Resurrection of Jesus. Upon its completion, the bells ring joyfully, and clay pots are tossed from house balconies and windows onto the streets. This is the most popular Easter tradition in Greece and symbolises the joy of the pious Greek people for the Resurrection of Christ.

On Easter Saturday night, the Resurrection is celebrated from an outdoor platform on Spianada Square (Corfu), where thousands of worshippers and visitors, with musical accompaniment from the philharmonic orchestras, celebrate the most beautiful moment of Easter. The lit candles on the square and the surrounding windows create a spectacular overall setting. On Easter Sunday, the churches of the city parade the Icon of the Resurrection around the streets from 7 am.
