Explore Ios off the beaten track

Cyclades ● Ios ● 08 June 2017

Ios is one of the most popular islands of Cyclades, a party island full of young people that want to have fun, drink and dance until the dawn in the beautiful scenery of the Aegean Sea. However, this doesn't mean that you have to follow the mass tourism. If you are a non-traditional traveller, who is always in search of hidden gems and unusual experiences, you can spend wonderful vacations in Ios since it is an island that has something different to offer and an untouched part that will steal your heart.

The first thing you have to do is to rent a mode of transportation, which is ideal for the dirt roads of the island. Some of the best beaches in Ios are not easily accessible by car and some other are remote and secluded, but they definitely worth a try. Furthermore, there are many paths and spots in the countryside of Ios that can offer you panoramic impressive views. So, rent an ATV and explore places that can show you the unspoiled character of the island.

Another off-the-beaten-path experience in Ios are the chapels, which are said to be 365, meaning one for each day of the year. The chapels are literally everywhere, and it is really nice to admire their Cycladic architecture as well as climb on their top and enjoy the island from a high point.

The ancient town of Skarkos is also an unconventional experience you should not miss. This settlement dates back to the 3rd millennium B.C., and you will be impressed by the excavations that take place there.

If you like history and especially the long history of Greece, another hidden gem is waiting for you in Ios, the tomb of the famous epic poet Homer! There is controversy over the birthplace of Homer, but historians are certain that Ios was the last resting place of the poet. If you visit the ancient burial site, be prepared that there, it hasn't been found something more than a pile of rocks. However, if you think about the history of this place, you will definitely appreciate it.

In the area close to Homer's tomb, there are many remote, private beaches that can give you true moments of relaxation. Leave your ATV on the road and hike along the coastline. You will explore stunning beaches and small coves with great natural beauty. And the most important: you will feel the peace and privacy you are searching for in one of these private beaches.
