Greek festival: theatre performances in the place they were born

Athens ● Epidavros ● 11 August 2017

In your school, you have learned about Sophocles, Euripides and Aristophanes. If you have classical studies, you have been taught the tragedies Antigone, Medea or Oedipus. If you are a fan of theatre, it is possible you have seen the great ancient dramas in performances in your country. But in Greece, you can do something impressive. Watch these tragedies or comedies in the place where they were played for the first time, where their creator had shown them to the public and had participated with them in the contests of ancient Greece. The Greek festival is exactly that. A cultural institution, which hosts major Greek and worldwide famous performing artists in ancient performances in their original scenes.

Every summer, from June to September, spectators have the privilege to watch memorable productions in Greek, with English hyper titles. Thus, also the travellers in Greece have the opportunity to watch the ancient drama and feel the aura of the glorious antiquity, which gave birth to magnificent classic masterpieces that are being admired till today. Since 1955, the Greek festival takes place mainly in the ancient theatre of Epidavros and in Odeon of Herodus Atticus in Athens.

In the ancient theatre of Epidavros, in a wonderful position, which is located only 2 hours from Athens, you can spend amazing hours that are a part of ancient Greek culture. The theatre is well-preserved in a stunning location on the top of the cliff, inside a forest of pine trees and with a great view of the Saronic Gulf. You can do a day trip to Epidavros from Athens, swim in the wonderful beaches of Argolis, and then have a lifetime experience in this theatre of 11,000 spectators. Words are not enough to describe the feeling you have when you watch a performance of ancient comedy or tragedy in the same place, where almost 3,000 years ago it was played for the first time. And what is more impressive is that these performances, these masterpieces touch our hearts till today because they are classic and touch topic, like love, death, family, friendship and motherland that can leave no one unmoved.

In Athens, the ancient theatre of Dionysus right under the cliff of Acropolis, where all the ancients performances were played and theatre as a form of act was born, is not open to the public because it is not well-preserved enough to host thousands of visitors at once. However, many performances take place in Odeon of Herodus Atticus near the ancient theatre. Odeon of Herodus Atticus operates also since the antiquity and is a perfect place to watch a concert or a theatrical show under the stars and in the shadow of Acropolis.
