Are you planning your next summer vacation in Greece and have you heard about Greek Island Hopping? Greek Island Hopping is the new trend in Greece: you travel during your holidays from one island to another and you can discover more of this unique world of the Greek islands. Island hopping offers you the possibility to explore more places than just one destination and live holidays full of adventure, new places and once in a lifetime memories. If you can't decide where to spend your island-hopping vacation -in the Aegean or the Ionian Sea-, just read this article with the characteristics of each group of islands, book your accommodation and ferry tickets and get ready for summer!

Aegean Sea

The islands of the Aegean Sea have a unique aura. The landscape there is dry, wild and on many islands, such as Santorini, Nisyros, Kimolos and Milos, volcanic. Especially the Cycladic islands are extensive areas without any tree. The beaches are the perfect place to sunbathe, but thanks to the breeze and the wind of the Aegean Sea, the temperature is not too hot.

The beauty of the Aegean Sea is impressive and you can easily fall in love with. Endless blue, steep cliffs, white or black sand and the charm of mystery of the Aegean Sea, the cradle of the Greek and Western civilisation. These islands have a different character that can be found only there. The beaches are impressive, many of them with lunar landscape, imposing rocks and extraordinary scenery. Moreover, the villages and towns are also something that can be found only in Greece. Whitewashed houses on the top of a cliff or by the sea, narrow paved streets and bougainvilleas hanging on the colourful balconies create the exact picture of the Greek summer.

On the Aegean islands, there are many important archaeological sites, such as Delos, Akrotiri in Santorini and Catacombs in Milos. Another advantage of the Aegean Islands is that many of them, such as Kythnos, Kea, Serifos and Andros, are situated in a short distance to Athens.

Last but not least, the distance between the Aegean islands is very short and the ferries numerous, so that you can easily, conveniently and on a budget jump from one island to another during your Greek Island Hopping.

Ionian Sea

The Ionian islands have a mild, friendly character. The characteristic of their landscape is the verdant nature. Pine trees and cedar trees until the coastline is a usual picture of the beaches in the Ionian Sea, and thus, the waters of these beaches have an amazing emerald colour. Furthermore, the trees create shadow, which is perfect if you travel with your children. You can just lie under a tree, relax and avoid the warm sun and the danger of sunstroke. It is not a coincidence that many family-friendly Greek islands, such as Corfu and Lefkada, are located in the Ionian Sea.

Moreover, the Ionian islands have extraordinary natural and urban beauty. Some of the most beautiful Greek beaches with lush greenery, like Myrtos in Kefalonia and Shipwreck Beach in Zakynthos, are situated in the Ionian Sea. The villages and towns have kept their traditional character, which is of Venetian and Italian style, like the Old Town in Corfu and Fiskardo in Kefalonia.
