Hiking paths in mainland Greece

Meteora ● 14 July 2017

Most of Greece is mountainous and a hiker's paradise, where you can climb and hike in beautiful mountains and well-maintained hiking paths in amazing nature and with breathtaking view. The hiking paths in Greece are very interesting since they pass by lovely small villages with hospitable locals and are very close to the sea, even if they are not situated on an island's mountain. These are the best hiking paths in several areas of mainland Greece. Remember that hiking in Greece can be done the whole year because the winter is mild and rainy days are less than in other European countries. The temperatures during summer are also not very hot on the top of the mountains and inside the lush greenery.

Meteora

Meteora (= middle of the sky) is a formation of huge monolithic rocks, which dominate the whole area. Amazing Byzantine monasteries have been constructed on top of these rocks, and the view of the valley is magnificent. Walking and hiking on the mountains of Meteora is not only a challenge, but also a cultural excursion between the monasteries. Before roads were built, these hiking paths were the only routes the monks had to communicate with the rest of the world.

Mount Olympus

Mount Olympus is the highest mountain in Greece. It is located on the border between Thessaly and Macedonia (Greece). The landscape and the natural beauty of Mount Olympus is unique in Europe, and every year as well in the winter as in the summer, thousands of people visit it to admire its rich fauna and flora with their several species, to hike on its slopes and reach its peaks. The starting point of these excursions is usually the village of Litochoro, a beautiful mountainous village, where the travellers after the tour on Mount Olympus can relax, enjoy the breathtaking view and eat in one of the traditional taverns.

Pilion Peninsula

The district of Pilion Volos consists of an extremely beautiful mountain, picturesque mountainous villages, each one with a different style and a unique character, as well as seaside villages since the most impressive with this mountain is that the sea is located in a very close distance to it. You can hike, admire the astonishing view of the gulf and then swim in the stunning beaches of the Aegean Sea. The best hiking path starts from Tsagkarada Pilion and ends in Milies Piliou, lasting about 2 hours.

Zagorochoria

In the mountains of Pindos in Epirus, 46 traditional villages with gorgeous old stone-built mansions and bridges offer you a breathtakingly beautiful tour for hiking holidays in Zagorochoria that you will never forget. Vikos Gorge is your best chance to hike in a place with wonderful natural beauty. If you don't want to hike for 7 hours, you can follow the paths that connect the villages and admire the stone houses and Voidomatis River,
