How to visit Mykonos on a budget

Cyclades ● Mykonos ● 11 June 2017

Food, drink and accommodation can be very expensive in Mykonos, but unfortunately, this is the price you have to pay if you want to spend your vacations in one of the best party islands worldwide, with wild nightlife and stunning beaches with amazing beach bars. Or maybe not? With these tips, you can visit Mykonos on a budget and spend wonderful vacations without having to pay a fortune.

The first thing you have to keep in mind is that Mykonos is expensive during the high season, which for that island is long, from June to September. Visiting Mykonos on the weekdays and not at weekends or in May, end of September and October will impress you with the fact that prices are much lower in the off-season than in the high season.

Furthermore, don't forget to book early your accommodation and ferries. If you leave this matter for a couple of weeks before your arrival, every hostel or hotel and ticket you find will be very expensive. The best deals in Mykonos are booked early, so planning is everything. According to the ferries, the overnight ferries or the boat that is slower than the ferry can offer you the cheapest price.

However, even in the off-season and with top deals, the accommodation in Mykonos can cost you a lot of money. The perfect choice is to avoid Mykonos Town. Generally speaking, Mykonos Town is beautiful, but it is very expensive, if you want to stay or eat there. So, choose a hostel outside Mykonos Town, such as in Paradise Beach (Mykonos), and eat in a traditional tavern in Ano Mera village, Ornos Mykonos or Agios Sostis beach, where the taverns have reasonable prices. If you want to combine your food with the clubbing afterwards in Mykonos Town, you can eat with 5€ per person souvlaki, which you will find very delicious and nutritious.

Drinks in Mykonos Town can also be very expensive, but Mykonos Town is the ultimate spot for clubbing and bar-hopping. The solution to this problem is to buy a beer or another drink from super market and to drink it while wandering in Matoyianni Street (Mykonos) and Old Port Mykonos You will quickly have the party feeling, and you will be ready for having fun without having to drink so much in the expensive bars of the island.

For your transportation, the cheapest way is to use the public transportation, which can get you everywhere and is frequent. Another low-budget transport way is to rent a moped, which costs about 20€ per day, but it requires a license and is not the safest thing to do on an island with dangerous roads and drunk drivers.

Expensive can also be the sunbeds and umbrellas in the beaches of Mykonos. That depends on the beach, but in the most famous beaches, the set of 2 sunbeds and one umbrella can cost more than 20€. However, you can always lie on the beach without sunbed because there is a lot of space or to visit an unorganised beach, which is equally beautiful and can reveal you the authentic, untouched character of Mykonos.
