Independent travelling in the Ionian islands: what not to miss

Antipaxoi ● Corfu ● Zakynthos ● 07 April 2018

When travelling independently, you have no one to tell you where to go. This is the ultimate freedom. You can go off the beaten path, away from mass tourism, everywhere you like. You don't have to follow a guide, you can create on your own your schedule and your tours. If you like independence and flexibility, if you want to be an explorer of the place you have visited, bespoke holidays are exactly what you need. However, the thing is that you really have to discover everything by yourself, and this can be demanding. There are some sites that you could not miss, the sites and beaches that are everywhere, in every guide you read. But when you are going to visit many destinations, for example if you are interested in Greek Island Hopping and you are going to visit more Greek islands during your vacation, there is the chance that you miss some interesting places and tours with so many things in your mind. If you are now planning your island hopping in the Ionian Sea, read this article for some things to do that are unique and fascinating.

Caretta-caretta tour

For the lovers of the wildlife, Zakynthos is an amazing place. It is the island, and especially Laganas Beach and Marathonissi, where the rare species of sea turtle caretta-caretta lives and lays its eggs. There are some spaces on the beaches that are protected, without sunbeds and umbrellas, but the most fascinating fact is that you can take the boat in Laganas Beach and see the sea turtles swim carefree. This tour is the best gift you can do to your child!

Blue Caves and Shipwreck tour

Zakynthos is also an island with exquisite beaches. The most famous of all is Shipwreck Beach, and you probably have heard of it. What you probably don't know is that you can combine the visit by boat to Shipwreck Beach (this beach is accessible only by boat) with the tour in Blue Caves. Near Volimes, a lovely seaside village, are located the Blue Caves. Interesting arches created by erosion and the reflection of the blue waters and the shine of the sky in them make the Blue Caves one of the most spectacular attractions in Zakynthos. They are also a must spot for the lovers of diving.

Antipaxoi

If you travel to Corfu or even closer, to Paxoi, don't miss to go by boat to the nearby tiny island of Antipaxoi. This island has spectacular turquoise and indigo waters, cliff top surroundings and welcoming taverns. It is impossible to resist to the pearl-coloured sand the moment you step off the boat onto Antipaxoi.

Old Perithia

Corfu is renowned all over the world for its Old Town, which is World Heritage of UNESCO. But don't stay only in Corfu Town. There is also one another settlement that is definitely worth visiting. The village of Old Perithia is a unique village, as it seems to remain unchanged over the course of centuries. It is a perfect example of how Corfu's first villages looked like and a representative sample of the Venetian architecture with houses made of stones. A walk in the paved streets of this village is a must!

Porto Katsiki

Lefkada has gorgeous beaches, and some of them are located in a short distance to the port and main town. You can easily avoid long distances and swim in excellent sea waters. But the thing is that there is a remote beach that is worth driving the 45 km south from Lefkada Town. Porto Katsiki is considered among the 6 best beaches in the Mediterranean Sea. White sand, impressive waters and the imposing cliff above the cove create a picture that looks like an astonishingly beautiful painting.
