Are you planning your vacation in Greece? Have you booked your accommodation in a city of Greece, but you have heard about Greek Island Hopping and you want to have this amazing experience? The good news is that island hopping in Greece is possible even from mainland Greece. You can easily combine your Greek vacation in a city with a few days on the Greek islands, which are numerous and some of them located very close to large cities. Have a look in our recommendations and prepare yourself for the ultimate combination of sea, beauty and sun.

From Athens

Athens is a very interesting city, and you can definitely spend there a whole week, admiring its ancient sites, enjoying its vivid nightlife and wandering around the Old Town with the pebbled streets and the cozy local shops. Athens has also many beautiful beaches in a close distance to city centre. However, if you want to live the experience of Greek Island Hopping, you can do it from Athens affordably and quickly. Saronic islands are located just a breath from Athens (1-2 hours by boat). Starting from Aegina, you can explore the Saronic Gulf, which is characterised by crystal clear waters, verdant nature with pine trees and islands with traditional harbours and elegant atmosphere. After Aegina, you can go to Poros, Hydra and Spetses and spend a night on these islands or have a day trip. Neoclassical mansions in addition to the feeling that you are so close yet so far away from Athens will impress you.

Aegina

From Patras

Patras is the third largest city of Greece and a vivid university town. It is renowned for its carnival as well as its cuisine and the traditional seaside taverns. Patras is situated near the Ionian Sea and has the asset that you can easily visit the Ionian Islands by boat within 1-2 hours. Especially Kefalonia, Ithaca and Zakynthos are in a very short distance to Patras. Lush greenery, amazingly emerald sea waters and some of the most famous beaches worldwide, such as Shipwreck Beach and Myrtos, are only some of the characteristics of these islands. Zakynthos is famous for its wild nightlife in Laganas, while Kefalonia is an elegant island with a traditional small town (Fiskardo) on the northern side, which you will adore. Ithaca is the island of Odysseus and is characterised by calmness and hospitable local people.

Kefalonia

From Volos

Volos is maybe the most beautiful seaside town of Greece. Small ouzeris at the beachfront serving ouzo and tsipouro with mezedes, the sea promenade, the local shops as well as the mountainous villages of Mt. Pelion make the visit to this area definitely worthwhile. In addition to all these, you can do also island hopping. A breath from Volos are located the islands of Sporades with their impressive landscape. Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos and Skyros are some of the most beautiful Greek islands with turquoise sea waters, well-preserved main towns, breathtaking beaches and touristic facilities that are ideal for families as well as for couples and young people.
