Mt. Pelion and Sporades: mountain vacation and island hopping

Alonissos ● Pelion ● Skiathos ● skopelos ● Skyros ● Sporades ● 28 January 2018

Greece has an advantage that only a few touristic destinations in the world have. It gives you the opportunity to combine mountain and sea during your vacation. The greatest example of this unique combination due to the close distance between the sea and the mountain is Mt. Pelion, the legendary mountain of Centaurus in Thessaly, which has not only wonderful mountainous as well as seaside villages surrounded by stunning beaches, but also the island complex of Sporades in a very close distance to it, which makes it affordable and easy to live the experience of Greek Island Hopping, jumping in less than one hour from one island to another (4 islands in total).

Remember that on Mt. Pelion as well as in Skopelos, one of the islands in Sporades, was shot the film Mamma Mia, which impressed the whole world with its unique pictures of the area's verdant nature.

Mt. Pelion

Mountain Pelion combines the summer with the winter scenery and attracts tourists all year long. The traditional mountainous villages in combination with villages by the sea with astonishing beaches in a close distance to each other and luxury seaside hotels give the traveller the opportunity to experience winter and summer holidays together!

Pelion is full of picturesque villages, each one with a different style and a unique character. Makrinitsa is one of the most beautiful villages with a breathtaking view of Pagasetic Gulf, and it is built amphitheatrically on the slopes of a green mountainside.  Near Makrinitsa, are located the equally wonderful villages of Portaria and Vizitsa with their lovely squares, traditional mansions and stone houses as well as interesting paths in the mountain, which are perfect for the lovers of hiking. Milies, Tsagkarada and Chania are also picturesque villages that give you the opportunity of spending your day on the mountain hiking and being in contact with nature or swimming and sunbathing on the exotic beaches nearby.

With the crystal waters of the Aegean Sea and green scenery, the beaches of Pelion Peninsula are the best place to swim, relax and admire the beauty of the nature. Agios Ioannis, Mylopotamos, Tsagkarada Papa Nero and Horefto are the most famous among them. They are organised, offering all touristic facilities, and after swimming, you can eat or drink coffee in the beautiful seaside villages that are located next to these beaches.

Sporades

Sporades are the islands that are located in a short distance to Volos and are distinguished by their traditional harbours and the exotic beaches with the literally emerald waters. Skiathos is a clearly party island, the counterweight to Mykonos in northern Greece, and it impresses with its well-preserved Chora with colourful mansions, elegant restaurants and bars to have fun until the dawn. Lalaria and Koukounaries are considered two of the best beaches in Greece, but generally all beaches are wonderful, organised and with cozy beach bars full of young people.

During the island hopping in Sporades, you can visit also Skopelos, the island that impresses everyone with its Chora. Built amphitheatrically, it has paved streets, traditional taverns by the sea and the feeling of a family-friendly Greek island to relax and enjoy the delicious cuisine. We suggest you to rent a car and drive across the island to explore several caves and remote beaches with lush greenery an crystal-clear waters for you only.

Alonissos is a low profile Greek island with lush greenery, wonderful beaches and traditional, lovely villages. In Alonissos, you will find the privacy you want, while one of its greatest assets is the day trip by boat in order to see monachus monachus, the protected species of seal, which lives in the sea around Alonissos. The beach of Agios Dimitrios is an impressive cave you should not miss!

Skyros is the remotest island of Sporades in the middle of the Aegean Sea. It has a totally different character than the other islands with a unique wild landscape and a Chora that reminds of Cyclades. There, you will taste delicious local dishes, meet the hospitable local people and wander around an authentic island that has kept its assets for the alternative travellers that want to explore it. A jewel like coming from Cyclades is the best place to complete your island hopping in Sporades.
