Athens has an energetic art scene, which can be seen by anyone on the walls of the city that have become canvasses for extraordinary street art. However, for the lovers of contemporary art, take place in Athens significant art exhibitions in galleries, exhibition venues and museums, which host the work of visionary, new talents that can impress you.

It is common that many exhibitions are organised in popular museums of Athens. In the Museum of Cycladic Art as well the Benaki Museum, are organised creative contemporary art exhibitions that have something new to offer. Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center is also a multifunctional art destination, which you can find attractive. Respectively, the Onassis Foundation Cultural Center is a cultural space hosting events, festivals and actions across the whole spectrum of the arts, with emphasis on contemporary cultural expression from Greek artists and international collaborations. With reference to the galleries in Athens, you will be surprised to learn that there are important galleries, which host national as well as international exhibitions. The Breeder Gallery in Metaxourgeio Athens presents artists, such as Andreas Angelidakis, and tries to build strong relationships between art platforms and major biennales around the world. Bernier/Eliades Gallery in Thiseio champions a variety of artistic genres, such as minimalism, arte povera, land art and conceptual art, welcoming Greek as well as a young generation of American and European artists. In Thiseio, is also located the Eleni Koroneou Gallery, an innovative pioneer of contemporary art, which hosts exhibitions from internationally renowned artists, such as Helmut Middendorf, Michel Majerus and Dieter Roth. Gallery 7, in Kolonaki, takes a pluralistic approach to art, representing a diverse range of practitioners, such as painters, engraves, photographers and installation artists. One of the most striking art exhibitions of the gallery was the exhibition of the atmospheric paintings of the Australian artist Chrys Roboras.


The most popular periodic art exhibitions in Athens are Documenta 14 and Athens Biennale. Documenta 14 is a cultural event that began from Germany and this year, came also to Athens and will last from 8th April until 16th July. Extending over the city in more than 40 different public institutions, squares, cinema, university locations and libraries, it will show works from 160 international artists. Athens Biennale functions within an international network of large-scale periodic contemporary art events. It is organised yearly and aims to be an agent of constant change, creativity and innovation.
