Package holiday or independent travel?

Greece ● 29 March 2018

Planning your summer holidays in Greece? Are you wondering whether package holiday or independent travelling in Greece is ideal for you? Read here about the pros and cons and decide!

One thing is for sure: whatever you choose, vacation in Greece, and especially Greek Island Hopping, is an unforgettable experience!

Santorini

Package holiday

Package holiday is the traditional way of travelling for decades. A travel agency organises everything and offers you a package with air- and ferry-tickets, accommodation, guided tours and other activities. In Greece, you can mainly find package holidays for popular islands, such as Mykonos, Santorini, Rhodes, Crete, Zakynthos and Corfu. And here is the biggest disadvantage: you won't see anything away from mass tourism. No secluded, undiscovered islands, no lesser known beaches. You won't have the freedom to be an explorer. However, if convenience and relaxation are everything you need during your vacation, package holiday can be for you, and especially in the middle and low season, you can take advantage of great deals.

Independent travelling

When travelling independently, you book separately you air- and ferry-tickets and find the accommodation that you like. Plus, you decide which destination to choose. You can tailor make on things like duration, hotel and room type, islands you want to visit and other activities you like. This freedom made the self-made plan attractive the last years, and this is why young travellers prefer it. Bespoke holiday gives you flexibility around every activity you desire, and this sounds really appealing to independent travellers.

Moreover, in the online world, ferry and accommodation deals are not only for the travel agencies. You can also discover super offers that turn your trip into budget vacation. The key is to search and compare what you found to a holiday package. Most of the times, you realise that the prices are similar.

One issue in independent travelling is safety. In unsafe countries in Africa or Asia, you are obliged to travel with a group and follow only guided tours. But in Greece, a European country with all the touristic facilities you need, this is of course not a problem. If you worry that with bespoke holiday, you have no protection when things go wrong, you can still ensure against any company failure.

If you are the type of traveller, who wants to feel like an explorer and not a tourist, if you don't like the crowds of tourists around you and want to plan your own schedule, then self-made vacation is your thing!
