Piraeus, port city

Piraeus is located in the western region of Attica, almost 5 klm from the center of Athens. A big part of the Athenian industry is located in Piraeus. The port is a busy traversal, for goods and also for passengers. Ships with destination the Greek islands leave from the harbor which is connected with Kastela via the metro line.

The region where Piraeus is located has been inhabited since 2600 B.C. The city was firstly planned by the architect Ippodamus, and was built during the 5th cent. B.C. The defensive wall was built around the port during the period of 493-79 B.C. Later, Pericles finished the fortification, with the construction of the so called "Big wall" which protected both sides of the road between Athens and Piraeus.

The area met its decay in 395 B.C. and it was restored in the beginning of the 19th cent. But the final restoration begun in 1829 and in 1834 the port had been reconstructed, based on the initial plans. During the second world war the port was severely damaged due to German bombardment. One of the most important restored building is the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus , a constriction of 1884, which Ioannis Lazarimou designed. A true architectural jewel. Ernst Ziller's Hall (Bavarian architect) a construction of 1876 which is located in Alexandras square, is another architectural masterpiece. Also the Xatzikiriakio Orphanage, of 1883, the old Postoffice, the building of the Train station, the summer house of Metaxa (distiller), the building of the French Institution and many other beautiful building in Kastela area, in Profiti Ilia decorate with their presence the neighborhoods of Piraeus.
