Road trip in Greece: everything you need to know

Arkadia ● Mani ● Plastira Lake ● Zagorochoria ● 26 March 2018

Spring is the best time of the year for a road trip in Greece. The temperature is convenient, the weather sunny, and there are many beautiful destinations to discover by car, exploring picturesque villages and verdant nature. The road trip is also a budget way to spend your holidays if you are a company of 4 persons. How easy is it to organise a road trip? A piece of cake if you read the following tips!

Design the route

Flexibility is a great asset of a road trip, but don't make the mistake to decide everything the last minute. We recommend you to see the map, plan the stops you will make and book your accommodation in every village according to your preferences and the distance. You have a specific timeline, and without a schedule, you won't be able to visit everything you want.

Flexibility

However, during a road trip, flexibility is not only an option but a must. Many unexpected things can happen, and you should be prepared to make last-minute changes. In order not to get stressed in case of delay, it is better to have as a backup 2-3 days more and avoid the very strict schedule.

Where to go?

Greece has numerous beautiful spring destinations in mainland area, and it is wise to organise your route a priori. Peloponnese in southern Greece is a good idea because it combines history, seaside villages and green mountains for hiking. Mani, mountainous Arkadia and Messinia around Pylos are excellent choices in Peloponnese. In Epirus, Zagorochoria with their stone-built settlements and impressive Mt. Pindos are ideal for the lovers of tradition and nature, while in Thessaly, Lake Plastira with the innumerable options for sports around the lake and the nearby Meteora with the medieval monasteries built imposingly at the top of the cliff will impress you.

Have a specific budget

Talk with your partners in this road trip how much money you want to spend each day and be flexible for maximum 20€ per day. Thus, you can calculate your budget accurately. For the common expenses, such as gas and tolls, create a joint account in order to avoid forgetting who paid what.

Pack light

It is easy to say that you have plenty of space in the car to take everything you want with you. Well, this is true only if you are in the car maximum two persons. If you don't pack light, driving may be difficult for the driver, and you need more gas.

Don't forget

Driving licenses, water, travel games in the tablet, music, car charger and some light snacks are necessary for your road trip in Greece. And of course, the best mood you can have with your friends!
