Shopping in Athens: the best places

Athens ● 10 May 2017

In Athens, the shopping experience is great. Due to the economic crisis, sales (in July and February) as well as mid-season sales (in November and May) are generous, while also during the regular period, the shopkeepers are willing to offer you discount. The main areas for shopping in Athens is Athens Center, but there are also many districts in the suburbs, like Kifisia and Glyfada, which have a great variety of qualitative boutiques in a wonderful scenery.

In Athens Center, Attica is a huge mall with famous brands. It is located in Panepistimiou Street, near Syntagma Square, in a renovated neoclassical building that stands imposing and gives the district an elegant area. Clothes, shoes, lingerie, jewellery and cosmetics are waiting from you in one of the most beautiful places of Athens.

For shopping, ideal is also the pedestrian of Ermou at Syntagma Square. Here, you can find modern shops and cheap world famous brands, such as H&M, Accessories and Zara.

If you want to shop in luxury boutiques with haute couture brands, such as Prada, Dior and Hermes, Voukourestiou Street that begins from Attica, and the district of Kolonaki, under Lycabetttus hill are perfect.

In Athens Center, don't forget to visit Monastiraki Flea Market. This special market is not just a collection of small shops, but a place, where you will feel being in Turkey or in Arab countries with the bazaar that offers everything you can imagine. Beads for handmade jewellery, bags, shoes, antiques, books, souvenirs and delicacies are only some of the amazing things you can find in this small pedestrian at Monastiraki Square that has kept its traditional character of past decades.

Outside Athens Center, there are many districts with elegant shops and great deals. Glyfada is a huge marketplace in Athens Riviera, where you can shop and then, swim in one of the beaches nearby. To Glyfada, you can go by tram in about 40 minutes from Athens Center. Glyfada has also many cafés, restaurants and bars to spend your day enjoying the sun and have fun.

Kifisia is also a beautiful suburb in northern side of Athens for shopping and walking around. It is one of the most aristocratic districts in Athens, with well-preserved neoclassical and stone-built towers, luxury boutiques, quality and awarded restaurants and nice cafés. Especially in the summer, Kifisia is one of the best options as its temperature is lower than in Athens Center, and the place, full of trees, can offer you moments or relaxation. You can go to Kifisia by train, in only 30 minutes from Monastiraki.
