Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, a jewel in the heart of Athens

Athens ● 20 March 2017

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center was funded by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, which wanted to construct new facilities for the National Library of Greece and the Greek National Opera. The project started in 2006 and was completed in 2016, giving Athens a magnificent complex of modern buildings, surrounded by an amazing scenery of a wonderful park near the sea.

The magnitude of the project and the dreams of the Foundation required the creative presence of a visionary architect, who was selected via an international design competition. Renzo Piano gave with his intellectual curiosity and the historical and geographical understanding of the project's significance and location a multifunctional arts, education and entertainment complex, which impress every visitor.

The new building for the National Library of Greece modernised the institution, which was founded in 1832. The Library has a significant collection of books and other media, includes separate areas for adults, teenagers and children and offers a wide range of cultural and educational projects. The building of the 22,000 m2 combines the tradition with the technological innovation and aims to the communication and the spread of the information.

The Greek National Opera is an exciting destination for music lovers, hosting a variety of events and performances. Opera productions, theatre performances, musicals, concerts, ballets and multimedia art programs have found their home and can offer the Athenians as well as the travellers in Athens amazing und unforgettable moments of culture and inspiration.

The Stavros Niarchos Park is a vital green space and a breath of life for Athens. It offers many surprises to its visitors, such as opportunities for learning, rest, recreation and new experiences. With its lush garden landscape and the wide range of trees, plants, water fountains, allées, paths, playgrounds and open spaces is ideal for a leisure walk, exercise, play with the children as well as open-air concerts and exhibitions. Its ecological concept, functionality and physical topography support the public's needs and preferences.

Upon its completion, the Cultural Center was donated to the Greek State in order to be used and enjoyed by the Greek people. Guided tours take place inside the buildings as well as at the park, so that the visitors and the citizens of Athens get familiar with this popular attraction. The mission and the vision of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center mirror the cultural importance of Athens, which has not only ancient archaeological sites to offer but also modern architectural miracles that are unique in Europe.
