The archaeological exhibitions in Athens Airport

Athens ● 18 August 2017

Do you find boring the hours you have to spend in an airport waiting for your flight? Not anymore! Nowadays, the airports all over the world provide the passengers many activities, events, museums and exhibitions, giving them a memorable first and last impression of the country and making spending time at the airport a richer and fuller experience for travellers. This especially rings true for Athens International Airport, the airport of the city, which is one of the most significant historical places for the western civilisation. These are the three must-see permanent exhibitions at the Departures Level of the Main Terminal Building.

Exhibition of Archaeological Findings

First created in 2003, in co-operation with the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, this exhibition contains 172 archaeological artefacts excavated from the place, where Athens Airport was constructed. These findings date back from the Neolithic and Early Helladic to the post-Byzantine Period. The exhibition is open daily 06:00-23:00 and aims to promote the rich cultural heritage of the area around Athens Airport.

Exhibition about Eleftherios Venizelos

Athens Airport took its name after the eminent Greek statesman, Eleftherios Venizelos. The exhibition, which is created in co-operation with the National Research Foundation "Eleftherios Venizelos", outlines the significant role Eleftherios Venizelos played in shaping the history of modern Greece. A series of interactive monitors and representative photographs reveal important aspects of the life and the work of this important Greek politician. This exhibition also recognises his major contribution to the development of civil aviation in Greece, such as the establishment of the first Ministry of Aviation.

The Acropolis Museum

This exhibition is hosted in a specially-designed area of the Main Terminal Building and organised in co-operation with the Acropolis Museum. Housing the masterpieces of Acropolis, the Museum offers its visitors a fresh view of life in Greek antiquity in a building designed by an award-winning architect. The exhibition includes cast copies of the west Parthenon frieze and a cast copy of the Peplos Kore, one of the most beautiful votive offerings of the archaic Acropolis. In addition, the exhibition has a digital presentation of the Peplos Kore with the marble surface of the statue coloured as it is thought to have been originally, as well as a video presentation of the Acropolis Museum.

Next time you have to spend a few hours in Athens Airport, you don't have to find a hotel near airport to kill your time. Athens International Airport can offer you some really interesting moments.
