The astonishing beaches of Koufonisi

Aegean islands ● Cyclades ● Koufonisi ● 24 July 2017

Koufonisi is a small island in Cyclades, which is considered to be the Caribbean of Greece. Turquoise waters, golden soft sand and impressive caves in the coastline create an exotic scenery that is a heaven on earth. In this azure sea, you don't want to go out, you just want to swim there for the rest of your life. And the best thing is that all the beaches are within walking distance from the port, since Koufonisi is a tiny island (only 15 square meters).

The first beach you can swim and is very wonderful is the beach of the port. The port and the Chora are very small, so the sea is very clean, with the amazing crystal waters you will find everywhere on the island. You won't believe how beautiful this beach is, although it is near the port. The caiques and the sailing boats in this cove create a typically Cycladic scenery in front of the white-washed houses.

From the port, you can start walking to the beach of Foinikas. The distance is about 15 minutes on foot, and you will have the chance to admire the stunning coastline with the imposing rocks and the caves that stand in the emerald waters, so the route to Foinikas won't tire you. Foinikas is a cozy cove with some trees and a tavern. Near Foinikas, is located the beach of Fanos with a beach bar, and near Fanos, the unorganised beach of Italida. You can walk and decide where you want to sunbathe and swim. They look like each other, and they have one asset in common: the astonishing waters that make you feel being in an oasis.

On the road to the remotest (only 2 km from the port!) beach of Koufonisi, Pori, you will meet Pisines (=pools), some caves and rocks that remind of a pool thanks to their formations and the colour of the waters.

Pori is the best beach of Koufonisi, an impressively beautiful long sandy bay with calm turquoise waters. On the one side, the beach is perfect for sunbathing and swimming, and on the other side, the waves create a wild scenery with rocks and landscape like being in a desert. One beach bar and an elegant restaurant are perfectly combined with the natural setting, and you can literally spend there the whole day, admiring the beauty of Pori and forgetting everything else.

From Pori, walk 5 minutes to Gala (=milk), a breathtaking cave with azure waters that are combined with the white foams of the waves, giving this formation this weird name. The route on the wild rocks with a magnificent view of the Aegean Sea is just an experience, which can't be described by words.

Since Koufonisi is a complex of two islands, Ano and Kato Koufonisi, you can take the daily boat from Ano (=upper) Koufonisi to Kato (=under) Koufonisi. Kato Koufonisi is uninhabited and one of the most popular spots for free camping in Greece. After half an hour by boat, you will reach the most beautiful beach of Kato Koufonisi, Nero (=water), an impressive beach with steep cliffs and deep blue waters.
