The best beaches in Lassithi

Crete ● Lassithi ● 10 June 2017

Lassithi is the fourth and most exotic prefecture of Crete, located in the eastern side of the island. The main town of Lassithi is Agios Nikolaos, around which you can find many beautiful beaches, but the whole area, from the north to the south, is full of amazing coves that will remind you of Africa. The beaches mentioned in this article are only few of the beaches in the region, but they are the top coasts you should no way miss during your vacations in this untouched part of Crete.

1. Vai

94 km from Agios Nikolaos, lies the beach of Vai, a shore you won't believe that it is in Greece and is one of the best things to do in Lassithi. Surrounded by the largest palm tree forest in Europe, with 5,000 palm trees, Vai Beach is a beach that reminds of the exotic shores of Africa, Asia and Caribe. White sand, crystal waters and the warm sun make you believe that you have found the heaven on earth.

2. Gaidouronissi

From Ierapetra, a small town in the southern side of Lassithi, you can take the boat for an excursion to Gaidouronissi, a tiny island also called Chrissi. Crystal waters, golden sand and few umbrellas that do not spoil the landscape make this beach one of the most beautiful in Crete.

3. Elounda

Elounda (Crete) is an elegant touristic resort north of Agios Nikolaos, which is very popular among the Greek celebrities thanks to its luxury hotels and the privacy of its beaches. Many hotels have their own beaches, but there is also the main beach at the port of Elounda, which is pebbled and organised.

4. Agia Fotia

Located 13 km from Ierapetra, Agia Fotia is a coast in lush greenery of pine trees, deep blue waters and white sand. It is partly organised, but at the same time secluded and peaceful, perfect for a calm and relaxing day on the beach and in the lovely fishing village nearby.

5. Havania

Havania is a wonderful long sandy beach with sunbeds and umbrellas. The biggest advantage of Havania is that it is located within walking distance from Agios Nikolaos so that you can combine your stroll in this nice town of Crete with a day by the sea.

6. Itanos

80 km from Agios Nikolaos, lies an off-the-beaten-path choice for those, who are searching of alternative beaches. Non-organised and secluded, Itanos Beach is ideal for total privacy in the crystal waters of the Cretan sea. the landscape is stunning, the waters are the clearest you will find, and the whole experience is a true contact with nature.
