The best excursions from Athens

Athens is located in the prefecture of Attica, which is very interesting and includes many sites and beautiful locations that are worth visiting. Of course, Athens is a vivid city that offers its visitor numerous and amazing things to do, but if you have spent a lot of days there, and you want to see something different, there are many excursions and day trips you can do from Athens in order to feel the aura of the summer and experience the nature and the sea.

1. Sounio

Sounio is the cape of Athens that has a stunning view of the Aegean Sea. In Sounio, is located the ancient temple of Poseidon, which is one of the best archaeological sites of Athens. Sounio is a beautiful area, 60 km from Athens Center, which is famous for the crystal waters of the sea and the astonishing beaches. K.A.P.E. is a small bay with turquoise waters, but it is not organised, while Legraina is a long, sandy beach with sunbeds and two beach bars. A wonderful beach is also that under the hill, where the ancient Temple of Poseidon is located. It has sunbeds, umbrellas and two traditional taverns with seafood. The feeling of swimming and eating with the breathtaking view of the temple is unforgettable. All of these beaches have no entrance fee. You can go to Sounio by public road transport.

2. Saronic islands

The  Saronic Islands, the islands that are so close to Athens, have in common that they offer well-preserved tows, with neoclassical buildings, traditional taverns by the sea and beautiful promenades on the port. Their beaches are beautiful, with clear waters. To these islands, you must take the ferry or the ship from Piraeus Port. Aegina is the closest island to Athens as you can go there in only 45 minutes by ferry. By ferry, you can also reach Poros and Hydra in about 1,5 hour, and you will impressed by the fact that too close to Athens, you can find a heaven on earth.


3. Marathon Lake

The Lake of Marathon is located on the northern side of Attica (about 45 km from Athens Center) and is an artificial lake, which used to supply water to Athens until 1981. When it was constructed, the Marathon Dam was a symbol of modernisation of Greece. Nowadays, it is a relaxing place to drink coffee and admire the view and the nature, while you can combine this excursion with a visit to the place, where the Battle of Marathon took place in 490 BC (only 10 km from Marathon Lake), and the start of the Classical Marathon of Athens is located.

4. Mountain Parnitha

The Natural Park of Parnitha is a protected area in the north-western side of Athens with great variety of flora and fauna. It is the highest mountain of Attica that includes historical monuments, such as the Summer Palace of the former royal family of Greece, interesting hiking paths and shelters, where the mountaineers can relax and eat lunch. A walk with your kids there will be something unforgettable to them thanks to the numerous deers of the mountain. Parnitha is located 20 km from Athens Center, and you can go there by bus. From the bus terminal, you can take then the cable car, which leads to a casino as well to a nice area to walk and start hiking.

5. Nafplion

Nafplion is the most beautiful town in Argolis, in eastern Peloponnese. In a close distance to Athens (only 1,5 hour with public road transport), it is ideal for a day trip. The medieval atmosphere, the nostalgic aura of the Old Town with the narrow paved streets, the cobblestone promenade, the fish taverns by the sea and the cosmopolitanism of this small city make Nafplion one of the most popular towns in southern Greece. Here, you have many things to do, like visiting the Palamidi Fortress and the Castle of Mpourtzi or swimming in one of the beautiful beaches nearby.
