Patras is the third city of Greece, a university town and the port, where the boats depart to Italy. These are the best excursions in the wider area of Patras.

Kalavrita
Kalavrita is a picturesque town, 1 hour from Patras, with traditional architecture, which is surrounded by green forests and steep mountains. You can walk around the pebbled streets, shop local products, drink coffee in one of the cosy coffee shops or eat in one of the many restaurants and taverns with Greek cuisine you will find. According to the accommodation, in the town and the villages around it, there are many hotels and guest houses at reasonable prices.

Helmos Ski Centre

The beauty of the mountain is breathtaking, and you will feel that you are skiing in Switzerland. You can also do there other winter sports such as snowboard, hiking or langlauf.

The Monastery of Mega Spileo
The Holy Monastery of Mega Spileo is the oldest orthodox monastery in Greece. It is located 80 km from Patras, and it was built in 362 A.D. on a rocky hill, at height of 924 m. Its architecture reminds of a fortress, and it is worth mentioning that the monastery was constructed by two brothers when a shepherd girl found miraculously an icon of Virgin Mary inside a cave. It is believed that Apostle Luke painted the icon.

The Monastery of Agia Lavra

Zarouchla
100 km from Patras, at mountain Helmos, is located the stunning village of Zarouchla. Stone-built houses, a beautiful square and a mountainous lovely surrounding are worth the visit and the route from Patras city.

Tsivlou Lake
In a close distance to Zarouchla, you can find Tsivlou Lake, one of the most popular lakes in Greece, with lush greenery and crystal waters. Many people swim in the lake, but the area is famous as a favourite spot for camping in Peloponnese.

The cog train
The cog train covers a distance of about 22 km from Kalavrita to Diakofto. It is one of the most beautiful trips in Greece because the train passes through rare natural sceneries and picturesque villages like Zachlorou. Take the train from Kalavrita or Diakofto, and enjoy one hour of breathtaking view that you have not ever seen.
