The best live stages in Athens

Athens ● 07 April 2017

The nightlife of Athens is famous all over Greece and Europe. Restaurants, bars and clubs, with modern and unique design, with alternative, rock, jazz, pop and Greek music are everywhere in the city, in Athens Center and other districts. Athens is literally the best place for the ultimate bar-hopping. However, the vivid nightlife of Athens includes not only bars and clubs with DJ's, but also stages with live music. Whether you are looking for rock, jazz or traditional Greek music, there is always a bar hosting a live performance for an unforgettable night, filled with music.

Live stage

The most popular live stages in Greece are bouzoukia, the nightclubs that feature traditional Greek music. They typically have a raised stage, where singers, dancers and musicians perform. The best tables are immediately adjacent to the stage and are reserved by rich and famous customers. Despite the belief that plate-smashing is a widespread Greek custom, today, flowers -and not plates- are thrown en masse on the feet of the artists.

In Athens, bouzoukia host performances of the most famous and popular singers of the Greek traditional music stage. The largest and best-known bouzoukia in Athens are the live stages of Votanikos, Club 22, Posidonio, Vox, Caramela, Iera Odos and Teatro.

Greek traditional live music is also played in taverns, where you can eat Greek cuisine with the accompaniment of artists singing Greek songs, while customers dance and have fun. You can find taverns with live Greek music on weekends in the districts of Psirri, Thiseio, Petralona and Monastiraki.

In addition to bouzoukia, in Athens, you can find many live stages with alternative, rock and jazz Greek music. For the performances in these stages, where famous singers and artists perform, you should have bought tickets many days or even weeks ago. The best live stages of this kind are Kyttaro, Anodos, Half Note Jazz Club, Architektoniki and Gyalino Mousiko Theatro.

However, the good news are that in Athens Center, you can find many bars with live music from upcoming bands that have something new and fresh to offer to their audience, without having to buy a ticket. A beautiful place is Gazarte in Gazi, which hosts live performances of jazz music as well as theatre and other art events. Faust in the area of Monastiraki Athens is an atmospheric bar with elegant decoration, which operates as a theatre and live stage for alternative performances. In general, in the streets around Syntagma Square and in Monastiraki, Gazi and Psirri, you can find on the weekends many bars with live music that will impress you with the quality of the bands and the fun of the people.
