The best off-the-beaten-path islands in Dodecanese

Arkioi ● Chalki ● Dodecanese ● Kastellorizo ● Nisyros ● Tilos ● 04 July 2017

Dodecanese is an island complex that includes many worldwide famous islands, like Rhodes, Kos and Patmos. However, like all island complexes in Greece, Dodecanese has also small, authentic islands that have kept their character and remain untouched and away from the mass tourism. These are the best unspoiled islands in Dodecanese for those, who want to go off-the-beaten-track.

Tilos

Tilos is located between Kos and Rhodes. It is an alternative destination with secluded beaches and small villages. The most touristic place is the port of the island, but you will be impressed by the village Mikro Chorio, a ghost village with abandoned buildings. If you want total privacy, your place to be is Tilos, which is also the ultimate destination for free camping in nature.

Arkioi

Arkioi is the populated islands in Dodecanese with only 44 people. It is located near Patmos, and when you visit this totally unspoiled from the mass tourism island, you will feel that you have travelled back in time. The small port welcomes you, and the people there appreciate every single tourist, who takes the boat from Patmos and visit their island. In Arkioi, you will find unbelievable serenity, you can discuss with the hospitable people there, eat fresh fish and forget the noise and the expensive prices of the crowded islands.

Chalki

Chalki is one of the smallest inhabited islands of the Dodecanese with a permanent population of 330 people, which is increased during the summer months. Because its tourism is not as developed as on the other islands, Chalki is ideal for peace and privacy. The island is characterised by its impeccable architecture and the relaxing beaches, which are accessible by bus or on foot.

Nisyros

Nisyros is a volcanic island with wide caldera. Its volcano, the youngest volcano in Greece, is currently active but not erupting, so you don't have to worry about that. If you have heard about the volcano of Santorini, but you want an undeveloped and peaceful destination, Nisyros is an exquisite alternative. You can stay in Mandraki or Nikia, which are picturesque villages that can offer you the calmness you are looking for.

Kastellorizo

Kastellorizo is a tiny island with only one village and without beaches, but this fact should not discourage you because Kastellorizo is a mythical place and has stunning caves, where you can swim. It is the easternmost Greek island, literally closer to Turkey than to Greece. The architecture of the port has Italian and Ottoman influences, offering its visitors a surprising mixture of these civilisations. On this island, it was filmed in 1991 the Oscar-winning movie Mediterraneo.
