The best parks and green spaces in Athens

Athens ● 16 June 2017
If you have planned your trip to Athens, you may think that Athens, being a huge city and the capital of Greece, is nothing more than traffic jam, busy people and large urban areas without trees and free spaces. However, that doesn't reflect the reality. Of course, Athens is a populous city, and there are districts that lack of greenery and fresh air, but in Athens Center, you can find many green spaces, where you can walk, breathe fresh air or exercise. Vegetation in these areas comprises chiefly Mediterranean trees and bush species.

The first category of parks in Athens are the archaeological sites. The area around Acropolis Hill, the Ancient Agora (Athens), the Keramikos Archealogical site and the Roman Agora are places, where you can feel free to have a stroll and in addition to admiring the monuments, relax in the shade of the trees and have the feeling of being in one of the amazing parks you can find in Europe.

Park around Acropolis

Another category of green spaces are the hills and mountains of the city. Athens is surrounded by three high mountains, Mountain Imittos, Mountain Parnitha and Mountain Penteli. These mountains are located about 20 km from Athens Center, giving you the opportunity for a perfect excursion in the nature. Athens Center has, however, some hills that are also ideal to admire the nature of Athens. Lycabetttus hill  is located in the district of Kolonaki, above Syntagma Square, and Filopappos Hill is located near Thiseio, on the opposite side of Acropolis, and there, you will be impressed by the monument of Pnyx, the cradle of democracy, the place where the ancient Athenians voted. The view on these mountains and hills is just breathtaking as you can see the whole city, the Saronic Gulf and some of the Saronic Islands.

Mt. Parnitha

In Athens, there are also some parks that constitute green spaces, where usually are located cafes and places to sit, relax or play with your children. National Garden is situated near Syntagma Square, and it is a large park with palm and pine trees, walking paths and a small lake with ducks. Areos Park, which means the park of God Mars, is a huge park between the districts of Kipseli and Exarcheia that provides these populous areas with fresh air.

The most modern park, however, is the park of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre near Faliro, by the sea, which is a vital green space and a breath of life for Athens. It offers many surprises to its visitors, such as opportunities for learning, rest, recreation and new experiences. With its lush garden landscape and the wide range of trees, plants, water fountains, allées, paths, playgrounds and open spaces is ideal for a leisure walk, exercise, play with the children as well as open-air concerts and exhibitions. Its ecological concept, functionality and physical topography support the public's needs and preferences.
