The best spots in Athens Center

Athens is a very large city, but its historical center is perfect for walking. Everything is within walking distance, and in the amazing promenades of Athens Center, you can admire the old town, its ancient sites and the neoclassical architecture of the nice, colourful buildings as well as shop, meet new people and choose one of the numerous bars, taverns and cafes there. These are the best spots in historical Athens Center you should in no way miss. By reading this article, you will get familiar with the most beautiful and interesting districts in the Old Town of Athens, and you can have also an orientation for the monuments and the archaeological sites in Athens, which are worth visiting and are located in these districts.

Plaka

Plaka, under the shadow of Acropolis, is the most popular among tourists area of Athens Old Town, with narrow, pebbled streets to have a beautiful stroll. Kydathinaion is the main street there that is full of traditional taverns and local shops. In Plaka, there is also the district of Anafiotika, an area that gives you the feeling of being on an island with small houses climbing on the cliff of Acropolis.



Thiseio

The main spot of Thiseio is the pedestrian of Apostolou Paulou, an idyllic street under the Acropolis, on the opposite side to Plaka. The cliff of Acropolis stands imposing, and on the other side, cafes and bars as well as people having a walk create the perfect scenery to relax and admire the perfect view. Apostolou Paulou is renamed into Dionysiou Aeropagitou after Thiseio and ends in front of Acropolis Museum. This is by far the best walk in Athens. You are literally walk with a magnificent view of the Acropolis in a wonderful pedestrian with flowers, trees and luxury, neoclassical houses, bars, taverns and cafés. In this street, is also located the entrance to Pnyx, the place where democracy is born, and the Athenians voted. Nearby, you can see the cell of Socrates, where the great philosopher was imprisoned.



Monastiraki

Monastiraki is the area of Athens with the most multicultural atmosphere. On the square, is located a mosque and  a Flea Market, which reminds of the oriental origin of the city. You can come here also in the evening because Monastiraki is one of the most vivid districts of Athens, which is filled with young people until late at night. Adrianou, the main street of Monastiraki, is a small pedestrian zone that begins from Monastiraki and ends in Thiseio. It is located near Ancient Agora (Athens), and it offers a magnificent view of the Temple of Hephaestus. Small, neoclassical, colourful houses and traditional restaurants make this place ideal to relax, eat and drink coffee.



National Garden, Syntagma Square

Zappeion conference hall is a building with a huge courtyard inside the National Garden in the heart of Athens Center, near Syntagma Square. It is one of the major landmarks of Athens, and the whole area of the National Garden is ideal for a stroll in this beautiful park. Near the National Garden, you can see the building of the Greek Parliament.



Gkazi

Gkazi is a district, which used to be industrial but nowadays it is full of lofts, modern apartments, street art, bars, cafés and clubs. It is located 1 km from Monastiraki Athens, near Keramikos Archealogical site.
