The best tips for the Island Hopping in Cyclades

Cyclades ● 14 January 2018

If you are now planning your island-hopping vacation in the Cyclades, it is wise to collect as many travel tips as you can in order to be prepared for these special and at the same time amazing holidays in the most interesting island complex of Greece. Welcome to a whole new world, the world of sun, golden sand, emerald waters and whitewashed small villages!

Avoid nausea on the boat

Most boats and ferries have indoor and outdoor areas to stay during the trip. If you want to relax and sleep, the seats in the indoor area are definitely better than the deck. However, if you suffer from nausea, you should go straight to the outdoor area of the top deck to enjoy a great sea view and feel the fresh sea breeze on your face. Especially when you travel in the Cyclades by ferry, the strong winds can turn the journey into a nightmare for those suffering from nausea, so try to avoid travelling in August, when meltemi (the north wind in the Aegean Sea) is at its peak.

Greek Island Pass

The distance between the Cycladic islands is very short, and you can easily travel from one island to another within an hour or even less. However, if you buy separated ferry tickets for each route, the whole island-hopping journey will be expensive and strictly scheduled. Your best chance is to buy Greek Island Pass, which allows you to make several routes to 7 Cycladic islands whenever you want paying much less than the separated ferry tickets. This flexibility is exactly what you need during your summer vacation, and the pass for many routes at the price of one is what you are searching for in order to spend vacation on a budget (learn more).

Book early

Cyclades have two categories of islands. The one consists of popular islands, such as Mykonos and Santorini, that are overbooked in the high season. The other consists of untouched islands, such as Anafi, Schinoussa and Sikinos that have only a few hotels and rooms to let. Either way, you should book your accommodation early in order to get the best deals and avoid searching for a place to stay instead of swimming in the crystal sea.

Sunglasses, hat and sun-protection cream

The biggest mistake you can make is to forget your sunglasses, your hat and your sun-protection cream in the Cyclades. The sun shines constantly even during winter, and in the summer -although the temperatures are not very hot due to the winds- the sun can be dangerous. So, be sure you protect your skin and your head in order to avoid a sun- or heatstroke.

Say yes to variation

The island complex of Cyclades can offer you literally everything. Visit many islands and try something new. Don't stay only on the famous islands, but explore undiscovered islands, off-the-beaten-path routes and hidden gems, such as Small Cyclades. Numerous beaches, untouched villages and significant historical sites are waiting for you!
