The best villages of Naxos

Cyclades ● Naxos ● 04 June 2017

Naxos, the largest island of Cyclades, is not only its amazing beaches or its wonderful main town. Naxos has also beautiful traditional villages, seaside or mountainous that can show you the authentic character of the island.

Of course, the main town of Naxos, Chora, is a must-see. Like the most Cycladic islands, Naxos has a stunning Chora with whitewashed houses and labyrinth-like narrow streets, where you can walk and buy local products, clothes, jewellery and souvenirs from the traditional shops or just relax, eat in a cute tavern or drink coffee or cocktail. The oldest quarter in Naxos Chora is the Venetian Castle. It was constructed by the Venetians in the Medieval Times, and today, the most buildings in this area are boutique hotels, romantic restaurants and cultural venues.

Naxos Chora

The most famous village of Naxos is Apiranthos, a mountainous village, which is located 26 km from Naxos Chora. Apiranthos has kept its character and its traditional architecture with impressive houses made from marble. At the top of the hill, Apiranthos offers magnificent view, and it is surrounded by lush greenery and flowers. In Apiranthos, you will see the ruins of a windmill, a Venetian tower and an impressive church, while you can also visit its interesting museums, the Archaeological Museum, the Geological Museum and the Museum of Folk Art.

Apiranthos

Halki, in the centre of Naxos, is another authentic island that has kept its Venetian style. Halki, which is located 16 km from Naxos Chora, used to be the capital of the island as well as the main administrative and trade centre. Neoclassical buildings, Venetian towers and Byzantine churches testify the past wealth and prosperity of Halki.

Filoti, 18 km from Naxos Chora, has a picturesque street with cafés and restaurants as well as gorgeous surrounding nature, while Potamia is famous for its production of fruits, being close to old mills and running water.

Sangri, Melanes and Apollonas are villages that are worth a visit due to their beauty but also to their closeness to the ancient sites of the Temple of Demeter and the statues of Kouros respectively. Koronos is a romantic place, built amphitheatrically on the slopes of the hill with impeccable architecture, paved streets and many arches.

If you are looking for a lovely fishing village by the sea, Agia Anna is a perfect option for you, with its beach nearby and many touristic facilities, taverns and cafeterias.
