The districts of Athens: Koukaki

Athens ● 29 September 2017

Are you in search of the best place for your accommodation in Athens? Maybe, it's time to think about Koukaki, a rapidly upcoming district in Athens. Koukaki is, according to Airbnb and its wide research among travellers, one of the most interesting neighbourhoods in the world. Why is that? Because of its atmosphere that reminds of the old good Athens, its local shops and of course its magnificent view of Acropolis. In early 20th century, the other name of Koukaki was "Little Paris" showing thus the beauty of this place.

Koukaki is the district of Athens behind Filopappos Hill. It is an urban place with modern lofts, neoclassical houses and traditional small cafés and bars with a relaxing alternative aura, while the last years many galleries and art scenes prove the artistic colour of Koukaki. People wander around in a calm scenery, other sit under the shade of a tree in a café at a pedestrian street. Koukaki is full of young people and students thanks to the neighbouring university, but you will also see numerous tourists due to the reputation of the district. Athens hostels and hotels with Acropolis view are another characteristic of Koukaki, near the wine bars, the spots for a brunch on Sunday morning and the cocktail bars. New openings of interesting spots in the areas of culture and entertainment is a trend in Koukaki that shows the potential of this district.

Koukaki

The National Museum of Contemporary Art is housed in a former brewery, which has been turned into a modern building, a jewel of the city. It hosts popular exhibitions, collaborations, art events and performances that will impress you.

The art scene of Koukaki complete the art galleries of the neighbourhood. Eleni Marneri Gallery is a high-end boutique and gallery with unique gifts and souvenirs, ancient finds lying under the glass floor and presentations of Greek designers, mainly of jewellery, objects and unique designs. State of Concept is a non-profit gallery that gives space to new artists and bridges the gap between Athens and the international stage of Contemporary Art.

In Syggrou Avenue, the cinema "Mikrokosmos" plays cinefile movies and hosts the International Big Bang Short Film Festival with many movies from all over the world. In the same avenue, don't miss the legendary "Koukles" with their exceptional drug show since 1994.

If you are a fan of jogging, from Koukaki in only a few minutes, you can go to Filopappos Hill or Dionysiou Areopagitou Street just under Acropolis. Can you imagine a better scenery for your workout?
