The most beautiful towns in mainland Greece

Gytheio ● Ioannina ● Kavala ● Nafplion ● Xanthi ● 25 August 2017

Greece is not only its stunning islands. Mainland Greece has also many beautiful towns that have kept their traditional character. Well-preserved old towns, a medieval atmosphere and the feeling that you have travelled back in time give these towns a great asset, which makes them popular touristic destinations.

Nafplion

Nafplion is the most beautiful town in Argolis, in eastern Peloponnese. In a close distance to Athens, it is ideal for a romantic weekend. The medieval atmosphere, the nostalgic aura of the Old Town with the narrow paved streets, the cobblestone promenade, the fish taverns by the sea and the cosmopolitanism of this small city make Nafplion one of the most popular towns in southern Greece. Here, you have many things to do, like visiting the Palamidi Fortress and the Castle of Mpourtzi or swimming in one of the beautiful beaches nearby.

Ioannina

Ioannina, the capital of Epirus, is located around the beautiful Lake Pamvotida. The natural environment and the traditional character of Ioannina make it one of the most wonderful cities of Greece that is definitely worth a visit. The Castle of Ioannina is the oldest Byzantine fortress in Greece, and it was built in 528 AD by the Emperor Justinian. In the castle, you can see the outer wall, the citadel with the mosque and the old, walled town of Ioannina, one of the best-preserved old towns in Greece.

Kavala

Kavala is a beautiful town in Macedonia (Greece). Built amphitheatrically on the slopes of the hill, Kavala, which is situated by the sea, is a perfect example of a large city that has a unique character. The promenade between the sea, the nice houses and the narrow streets is a must in Kavala city that remains a jewel of the past time. In a close distance to Kavala, you can find many wonderful beaches as well as the island of Thasos with its lush greenery and the long beaches with the golden sand.

Xanthi Thrace

Xanthi Thrace has one of the most renowned old towns in Greece. The most remarkable thing in Xanthi Thrace is that it has kept its multicultural character being the crossroads between East and West, between Europe and Turkey. Churches and mosques, neoclassical houses and the famous carnival make Xanthi Thrace a popular destination for all seasons.

Gytheio

Gytheio, the capital of Mani in Peloponnese, is a colourful coastal town with neoclassical buildings that has kept its traditional character. The promenade by the sea is just amazing, and the fishing boats, the cafés and the taverns on the waterfront create a picturesque landscape. The whole area around Gytheio and Mani has an impressive natural landscape as well as many stunning villages that are waiting to be explored.
