The rough beauty of Folegandros

Folegandros is a small island with only 650 inhabitants, in Cyclades, close to Santorini and Milos. Although the last years it has become fashionable, it remains a traditional and untouched piece of what Greece has to offer. It has four small villages, Karavostasi, Chora, Ano Mera and Agali Beach and is perfect for quiet and peaceful vacations. How about thinking of spending some days in Folegandros during your Greek Island Hopping?

The first thing that the visitor of Folegandros observes is its rough beauty with the unadulterated architecture and the dry, lunar landscape. The roads are narrow and everything on that island makes you feel that you have visited a virgin paradise. Chora, the capital town of the island and one of the best things to do in Folegandros, is built with whitewashed houses with colourful windows and bougainvilleas hanging on them that strongly remind of the traditional Cycladic architecture. The cobblestone streets lead to the village’s squares, where the traveller can eat in romantic atmosphere local delicacies such as matsata and souroto and drink raki with honey, the famous rakomelo, which is considered the alternative option to the cocktails.

On the top of the hill, from where you can have a magnificent view to the Chora and the west coast, is located the impressive church of Panagia with a stone path leading to it. Another picturesque spot is also the village of Ano Mera, which is a traditional rural settlement of the 19th century. There you can find the Folk Art Museum as well as traditional taverns, from which you can enjoy the sunset painting the steep hills pink and orange.

The beaches of Folegandros are pebbly and covered with tamarisk trees. The most famous beach is Katergo, which is accessible only by boat from Karavostasi. At the west side of the island is located Agali beach with its azure, crystal- clear waters and sheer cliff drops, whilst close to it you can reach from a path the beach of Agios Nikolaos. In the northeastern part of the island lie the beaches of Vorina, with green peculiar stones, Agios Georgios and Serfiotiko, accessible only by caique or on foot.

The mountainous island is famous also for its footpaths, which give the traveller the opportunity for long hiking excursions. From Chora, you can hike to the beaches around Agali or to Katergo and Karavostasi, but especially from Ano Mera there are plenty of paths to the north-western or south-western coasts. The trail network is extensive, so there are many possibilities for the lovers of hiking.

One thing is for sure: Folegandros is an unexplored paradise that can give to its visitor a different, alternative and unique aura that no one can forget. Take the ferry, discover it and have the time of your life during your Island Hopping in Greece
