The seaside suburbs of Athens: what to do

Athens ● 24 September 2017

In the southern side of Athens, something really unique happens. The seaside suburbs of Athens, starting from Piraeus and ending in Sounio, are amazing districts that offer you a great experience of sea, culture and entertainment. Glyfada, Faliro, Vouliagmeni, Voula, Varkiza, Lagonisi and Saronida are beautiful areas where you can swim, visit interesting places and admire the natural beauty of Attica's landscape, which is characterised by pine trees, crystal waters and impressive dry rocks as you reach Cape Sounio, the gate of Athens to Aegean Sea.

Vouliagmeni Lake

Vouliagmeni Lake is a rare geological phenomenon. The waters are continuously refreshed by the sea, which is next to the lake, as well as by the underground thermal springs. The rocky scenery is imposing, and the high temperature of the waters offers a natural thermal spa experience. In addition to that, the caves give this aquatic paradise a special character, but if you don't want to swim, you can just relax, enjoy the beautiful landscape and eat or drink coffee in the elegant area of the lake.

Athens Riviera

Athens Riviera, the seaside part of the southern suburbs of Athens, is marked by an amazing coastline, wonderful beaches with pine trees and water sports amenities, as well as archaeological points of interests, such as the Temple of Poseidon in Sounio and the Temple of Apollo Zoster in Asteras Hotel. In Athens Riviera, there are also many bars, night clubs and chic restaurants for unforgettable moments under the stars. You can go to Akrotiri, the best summer live stage in Athens, eat coffee in Balux in Glufada in a scenery that reminds of exotic resorts or eat sushi and dance until the dawn in Island, an amazing place in Varkiza, at the edge of a cliff by the sea, which makes you feel exactly like being on an island. In Athens Riviera, are also located the most beautiful beaches close to Athens centre. The beaches of Alimos, Glufada, Voula and Vouliagmeni give you a perfect opportunity to get out of Athens Center, which can be very hot during July and August, and only within half an hour, feel on your face the sea breeze and swim in the crystal clear waters of the Saronic Gulf.

Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center was funded by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, which wanted to construct new facilities for the National Library of Greece and the Greek National Opera. It is located at the beginning of Athens Riviera, in the district of Faliro, in a close distance to Piraeus Port. Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center includes the National Library and Opera of Greece as well as a huge park, which is a vital green space for the Greek capital and a beautiful place to walk around, enjoy the magnificent view of the Saronic Gulf on the one side and Acropolis on the other side, and feel the sea breeze so close to Athens Center.

Glyfada Shopping Area

In Glyfada, one of the most elegant suburbs of Athens, you can have an unforgettable shopping experience. Glyfada is considered as one of the most beautiful shopping areas in Athens with a great variety of boutiques with famous brands, little cozy shops and malls. After shopping, you can eat in one of the numerous taverns and restaurants with various cuisines or drink coffee and a cocktail in one of the popular cafés and bars that make Glyfada one of the best nightlife spots in Athens.
