The wonderful nature of Athens

Athens ● Attica ● 22 May 2017

Athens is a huge city, a big capital, which is crowded and has traffic jam and every other problem that a populous city has. However, there are some spots in Athens, which make you believe that you have left the civil centre and you have moved out to an island or a small village, giving you breathes of peace and harmony. These spots are of course the stunning beaches of Athens, but the good news are that in Athens and on the wider region of Attica, you can also find many places to be in contact with the nature, breathe fresh air and make activities that will refresh you.

Mountain Parnitha

The Natural Park of Parnitha is a protected area in the north-western side of Athens with great variety of flora and fauna. It is the highest mountain of Attica that includes historical monuments, such as the Summer Palace of the former royal family of Greece, interesting hiking paths and shelters, where the mountaineers can relax and eat lunch. A walk with your kids will be there will be something unforgettable to them thanks to the numerous deers of the mountain.

Mountain Imittos

Mountain Imittos is located on the eastern side of Athens and is the closest mountain to Athens Center (only 7 km). It also has many hiking paths, but it is a milder mountain than Parnitha, where you can just relax. Mountain Imittos is one of the best places for jogging in Athens, where you can run and admire the breathtaking view of Athens under your feet. In fact, the view is something amazing, even from a low point. You can see whole Athens. from Piraeus Port to the northern and western suburbs of Athens, notice Acropolis in the middle and enjoy a wonderful sunset, while the sun sinks behind the Saronic Islands.

Lycabettus Hill

Lycabetttus hill is the highest hill of Athens, literally in the heart of Athens Center. Under Lycabetttus hill, is located the district of Kolonaki, which is famous as an elegant shopping area and lately, has also become a vivid nightlife area. On the top of the hill, there is a tiny church, an awarded luxury restaurant and a café, where you can go using the cable car from Kolonaki. There is also a road to a lower point, where you can go by car. At this point, is located a summer theatre, where concerts take place. The view of Lycabetttus hill is astonishing, and you can see Acropolis at the same height, just abreast you.

Vouliagmeni Lake

Vouliagmeni Lake in Athens Riviera is a rare geological phenomenon. The waters are continuously refreshed by the sea, which is next to the lake, as well as by the underground thermal springs. The rocky scenery is imposing, and the high temperature of the waters offers a natural thermal spa experience. In addition to that, the caves give this aquatic paradise a special character, but if you don't want to swim, you can just relax, enjoy the beautiful landscape and eat or drink coffee in the elegant area of the lake.

Marathon Lake

The Lake of Marathon is located on the northern side of Attica (about 45 km from Athens Center) and is an artificial lake, which used to supply water to Athens until 1981. When it was constructed, the Marathon Dam was a symbol of modernisation of Greece. Nowadays, it is a relaxing place to drink coffee and admire the view and the nature, while you can combine this excursion with a visit to the place, where the Battle of Marathon took place in 490 BC (only 10 km from Marathon Lake), and the start of the Classical Marathon of Athens is located.
