1. Moussaka

Moussaka, one of the most famous dishes of the Greek cuisine, is based on layering: grilled or fried aubergine, potato and zucchini and between the layers minced meat. On the top, onion, garlic and béchamel sauce create the best food with meat, vegetables and a creamy sauce.

2. Dolmades

Dolmades are grape leaf-wrapped rice parcel, eaten as finger food. Some dolmades have also minced meat or pine nuts.

The Aegean Sea is full of fishes, and thus, in every Greek island, you can eat fresh fish. The red mullet is cooked lightly fried, but the big fishes are whole grilled, served with a lemon-oil dressing.

5. Pies

Pies are very popular in Greece as an appetiser or a main dish. Filled with many cheeses (cheese pie) or spinach (spinach pie) or meat (meat pie), the pies are something you can find in every bakery of Greece.

6. Courgette balls

Courgette balls (kolokythokeftedes) are crispy balls with zucchini, mint and creamy cheese on the inside. It is a veggie starter and a very popular dish in Crete, which however you can find all over Greece.

7. Tomato fritters

Tomato fritters (tomatokeftedes) are the alternative to courgette balls, if you don't like zucchini. Basically, they are dried tomatoes fried with flour. They are also a veggie starter and are very popular in Santorini.

8. Feta cheese with honey

In this appetiser or dessert, feta is wrapped in filo pastry and then, is baked or fried, before honey is put on the top. The combination of salty feta and sweet honey create an amazing taste.

9. Pastitsio

Pastitsio is baked pasta with minced meat and béchamel sauce. It is the alternative to moussaka, but with spaghetti instead of vegetables.

10. Souvlaki

Souvlaki is the most famous street food in Greece, if not in Europe. Chicken or pork meat, combined with tzatziki, tomato, French fries and onion, is wrapped in a pita. It is cheap, delicious and the perfect food after alcohol.
