Top archaeological sites in Crete

In Crete, history, myth and culture walk hand in hand. Many civilisations from the Minoan, the Mycenaean and the Roman Times flourished on the island, and today, there are many archaeological sites, historical monuments and significant museums to explore.

1. Knossos

In Knossos, you will explore the Palace of Knossos that is a magnificent testament of the Minoan Civilisation. The most brilliant centre of Minoan Times is a perfect opportunity to learn the history of Crete from the beginning and see also traces of the Neolithic settlement that dates back to 6,000 B.C. Just 5 km from Heraklion, Knossos will impress you, and it is among the best things to do in Heraklion.

2. Phaistos

In Phaistos, there are also ruins of a Minoan Palace, but the place is not as crowded as Knossos. Visit the central courtyard, the royal apartments and the location where the famous Phaistos Disc was uncovered in 1903. Phaistos was the second cultural and commercial centre during the Minoan Times, and it was of great importance for this civilisation. It is also located in a close distance to Heraklion, and it is an archaeological site you should definitely visit.

3. The Archaeological Museum of Heraklion

The Archaeological Museum in Heraklion has a large collection of findings of the Minoan Civilisation. Among these, are the small statue of the Snake Goddess and the Phaistos Disc, a clay tablet with symbols of the writing system Linear A, which has not been deciphered.

4. Archaeological site of Gortyn

The ancient town of Gortyn was one of the oldest and most powerful cities of prehistorical and historical Crete It is located in a close distance to the villages of Agioi Deka and Mitropoli, and it is the biggest archaeological site in Crete and one of the biggest in Greece. In the main section of the site, you can see the Roman Odeum, an Early Byzantine church and roman sculptures found there.

5. Ancient Eleftherna

Ancient Eleftherna was built where the current village of Eleftherna near Rethymnon is located today. It was one of the most prominent ancient city-states with a fortified hill that protected it from the enemies. The area has been inhabited since 2,000 B.C., but the city reached its peak during the 7th century B.C.

6. The archaeological site of Agia Triada

The archaeological site of Agia Triada is worth visiting thanks to its astonishing natural beauty, on the edge of Geropotamos River. The site is named after the village of Agia Triada that is located next to it, since the Minoan name of the location is unknown. The site was inhabited as early as the third millennium B.C., and its most important monuments are the Royal Villa, a small Minoan Palace, the cemetery, the settlement and the Agora (marketplace).
